disabling all the system services you will never need, and setting the ones that you use occasionally to manual greatly improves performance.
windows is set up, by install default, for utter noobs. it has certain resources that an experienced user knows are eating away at threads and using idiotic chunks of memory.
this quickie guide assumes you are running vista or win7, and are an administrator...
ie: i disable these...
others things like hibernation, screensavers, system restore and virtual memory can also be switched off.
also...
within the control panel, select programs and features, then select turn windows features on or off
i deselect these:
i hope this help

this quickie guide assumes you are running vista or win7, and are an administrator...
- right-click on the taskbar and select start task manager
- select processes
- then click user name to order the running system processes easier
- items listed under your username or SYSTEM can be tweaked (LOCAL SYSTEM is a bit harder to do)
- leave this window opened
- click on the start button and select run
- in the box type msconfig.exe
- in this system configuration panel select startup
- uncheck all the "run on windows start" items that are non-essential
- click apply and exit that box
- right on my computer and select manage
- click services and applications
- click services
- then click startup type to order the system processes easier
- double-clicking on each of these will give you the option to start/stop these, and to choose their startup type
