The worst PSU night in History!

Man I had a cr@p night last night.... :(

Here's the sad tale ot two PSU's and my PC:

I am having to RMA my Antec Neo Power as it seems to have weak 3.3v Rails. Fine, no problems.

I bought a cheap New PSU that seemed ok (but I didn't have any hopes).

As the RMA will have to be done soon I though I'd try the new PSU in my system...fine.

Put it in (very carefully but the XP-120 is hard to get the PSU in with) and started up no probs. Checked the Rails and they were pretty bad so I thought I'd take the New PSU back and see if I can find a better one for around the same price.

So I put in my old PSU (carefully) and booted up and then re-started my OC slightly lower than what it was for stability. Merrily playing away in Firefox and the screen freezes. *sighs*

Held the off button, rebooted and nothing...well the fans span and the motherboards lights came on and I got no signal on the screen.

I though I'd try narrowing it down so I removed all components apart from vid card and HDD. Booted fine. Added one after another componenet and it booted fine. Tried some CS:S with Jim and Dave and it froze up again....just stopped with the same image on the screen. When I rebooted I got the same thing....fans and everything start up but no picture and they don't slow down (after the BIOS kicks in to stop them)

Put in the New crapper PSU and it booted with just the HDD and vid card. Tried adding any fans and it did the no POST thing. Also had various stages where it wouldn't go to post when I had one fan plugged in, just to the BIOS front screen.

Now I'm RMA'ing my PSU anyway but I don't really fancy living with my PC open on the floor with only the HDD and vid card plugged in (it works fine like this, can play CS:S etc) with my FSB set to standard.

Any ideas?

PC's gotta love 'em....and hate 'em! :ar:

Shit man sounds like one helluva night! Looks like you're just going to have to live with ur comp open and no fans w/ that POS psu till ur good one gets back. I don't see any other altrenative other than to run out and buy a new psu...

Best of luck and I'm hoping for a speedy return of ur Antec psu, when does it go out for rma?

Yep....just wanna know why its happening with the new crap PSU too? :(

Possibly because it IS a crap PSU :) Have a PSU u can pull out of a spare comp and test it real quick? That would eliminate PSU as the culprit.

U don't have any other computers in your house other than your main one???

One laptop...one really old crappie AMD system made by Packard Bell that I wouldn't take the PSU out ever! ;)

Kempez did you say that it only happens when plugging your fans in?

I had an issue a few years back where one of my fans was buggered and causing a short. When most PSU's detect a short they shutdown, and in some cases will not allow the machine to be switched back on for a certain time period (or until you power off at the back of the psu)

His will try and fire but hangs at POST, at least that's what I've gathered... I'm holding on to the shitty PSU theory in hopes that nothing else is messed up.

Thanks guys it may be a fan problem but I doubt it as it also happens with the DVD drive plugged in. I'm just hedging on a PSU problem.

The Antec NeoPower should be perfect for my system and Antec are a trusted brand who mak good PSU's. This one should be good but hopefully I just got a duff one. :(

hehe...unfortunately I can't afford a new one right now what with moving out and stuff, so this one will have to do.

I'm changing the New crap PSU I got for a slightly better one so hopefully that'll be ok!

I'll be putting it in today so fingers crossed!
