Is there a 3rd party dll or something u can use to find out what is using a file ?

(they don`t have a cache/thumbnails problem)

I have yet to find anything like that, but I would imagine someone out there has created something. That's one of the most annoying darn problems ever, specially when it gets you completely stumped and you can no longer think of what could possibly be utilizing the file.

If all else fails, try booting in via Safe Mode.

Try this:

OpenedFilesView v1.02

Copyright (c) 2006 Nir Sofer

Web site: http://www.nirsoft.net

Description

===========

OpenedFilesView displays the list of all opened files on your system. For

each opened file, additional information is displayed: handle value,

read/write/delete access, file position, the process that opened the

file, and more...

Optionally, you can also close one or more opened files, or close the

process that opened these files.

This utility is especially useful if you try to delete/move/open a file

and you get one of the following error messages:

* Cannot delete [filename]: There has been a sharing violation. The

source or destination file may be in use.

* Cannot delete [filename]: It is being used by another person or

program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

When you get one of these error messages, OpenedFilesView will show you

which process lock your file. Closing the right process will solve this

problem. optionally, you can also release the file by closing the handle

from OpenedFilesView utility. However, be aware that after closing a file

in this way, the program that opened the file may become unstable, and

even crash.

Tried that one ToG, some interesting stuff but seemed to display alot of information not really pertaining to anything that was locked.

However, any1 with these problems on a local level can try some of these utils: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/deletelockedfiles.shtml

Not much use to myself as it seems my files are being locked over a network, and I need to resetup the network to sort it out.

Give those utils a try tho, nice`n handy.

I have a pc on the network atm that is acting like a possesive beetch. Everything and absolutely anything another pc even looks at, the pc`s SYSTEM handles it and prevents deletion.

I have to use Unlocker to delete the files. Without another pc interacting it`s 99% fine.

Makes me think that prehaps it`s a network related thing.

Ok, I`ve semi recreated this problem yet again, and I think I know what the problem was and how it can be resolved.

I played around with the harddrive setups here, from 2 computers within an extisting network, introducing a 3rd - attempting to just join it to the same workgroup.

For some reason the workgroup was dropping in between jobs yesterday, and on investigating I notice that one of the pcs contains workgroup names for the recent one I was working with plus one that I`d used a long time ago which I think my laptop re-introduced as a prospective name.

Either way, one of the pcs contained 2 workgroups and combined with the sharing of drives, I ~believe~ it was confusing the 3 pcs. Hell knows why, but it did.

Yet again I was in a situation where I wanted to move files, but couldn`t delete them as "the file is in use..." - pffft.

Anywho, without using any connection/network setup stuff, I went straight to the ComputerName part of System, and changed the name of the Workgroup on all 3 pcs to something new and not used b4 - ever - and as if by magic all problems seem to have gone away.

I think windo$e gets too easily confused with simply legacy names of old networks, remembers them, and continues to try and use them. I thought it kept a reference of existing networks in NetHood, but there was nothing there. So the solution I found is all I can go on atm.

I add to this thread incase some1 else gets the same issue in the future.

EDIT: ***** Scratch that ******* It worked for about 10g of stuff, moved it and deleted, tried another folder and it continues to say the files are in use. Back to square 1.

Yeah, they`re good utils for a time-to-time basis, but shuffling 100s of files around on a daily basis gets beyond annoying if u have to keep switching back to the other pc`s monitor that`s meant to be dumb and just ly there.

This is extremely pishing me off now.

I`ve just thrown 3 pcs together into a network and atleast one of them is doing this everytime u try and move a file - all of a sudden it`s in use.

It`s definately a network thing.

I`ll be damned if this isn`t something really really stoopid.

Is there anyway to flush all of XP`s network settings so as u`r pc can act like it`s never touched a workgroup before ?
