the incredible shrinking heatsink???

can anybody chime in and explain the shrinking vrm heatsinks??? are the volt regs just getting more efficient,,, are the banks just getting smaller,,, or

were those GINORMOUS (yet really cool looking) heatsinks not necessary to begin with???
