The Antique Rig

^^ yeah, I know right ;)
Nah, I can't blame them. Everything we had was ancient, their pc was even older than mine. Both of my grandma's died last year, and after a few years of having just enough money to come around, they could finaly modernize. But that money wasn't unlimited too :p
I don't have to pay bills, so I can spend my money on whatever I want, so I can wait another month and spend all of my money on a new rig :p

How the heck can you live with that! I'm interested how it evens runs windows 7 never mind aero
Runs pretty stable, the thing is that I do have 1GB of RAM :p
Win7 requires an 1GHz CPU, a DX9 GPU and 1GB of RAM.
Yeah I'm upgrading soon
Also selling my PS3 so I can stretch to an HD7950 :D

Wow. I've got a Sempron 2400+ too, in the GA-7VM400AMF. It can run Windows 7? o.O

Learn me how! It's obviously (well, not sure if it'd be obvious after reading this thread) not my main rig, but I love figgling around with pc's and making old stuff run new software :)

Also looking for a 'decent' AGP card which doesn't make as much noise as my Radeon 9600 XT I had lying around.. May also have to invest in some RAM, it only has 256mb which I stole from my PowerMac G5 (which had 4x128mb ram lol)

Oh, it's got sata. Nice.

Well the CPU is perfectly fine for Windows 7 ;D
I'd indeed invest in a cheap AGP card and 1GB of DDR1 RAM :)
That should do the trick ;)

Aye! When I find a job this is the first thing that's getting replaced

Would Windows 8 support it too? Pentium 4's aren't supported by Win8, they'd run them perfectly fine :(

EDIT:
Oh, yes. Windows 8 should run on it w/o problems!

Actually I tried installing Windows 8 but it doesn't work, because the 2400+ doesn't support SSE2 :(

Oh, I saw others on the interwebs got it working. Might give it a try, if it doesn't work I'll just install Win7 :)

EDIT:
Yay, got Win7 installed now. I only have 512mb though, I should upgrade that before upgrading to Windows 8 :D

EDIT 2:
Just installed HWInfo, apparently I have a Sempron 2800+ @ 2ghz. Now, let's start overclocking die hard!

Yeah, I know... :(
I quit my job at McDonald's, because they made me work all of the holidays, had me be there at 8AM and let me walk for hours in the cold cleaning up every McDonald's box/cup/product that I saw on the ground.
I've applied for a few jobs, but I haven't heard anything yet :(
As soon as I have a job, I can start saving up some money for a decent rig :/

A little bit of advice, no matter how bad the job is never quit one till you have another. that way you are never out of pocket, but keep your chin up mate you will get a new job soon and can get a start on your build.

Yeah, I learnt it the hard way
Well, I'm just going to keep searching for a job, I did get an internship at a local newspaper for school, although that's just for a week. If all goes well, I might find a small job there! :D

Now, as said above, always line up a job before leaving the other one (if possible) also.. try not to ever just quit. Give notice..(2 weeks is normal) SOMETIMES the managers will try to work out how to keep you, other times .. no. Being that it was McD's its not a big deal to just leave, im talking about future jobs. You NEVER know who your boss knows! I have known a few people who had to move out of town to get another job in the same field because of how they quit. Dont screw over your boss :)

Good luck with the internship!

Yeah I know :) I didn't really quit in a rude way, I said it was too far away (had to cycle about 1 hour and 45 minutes every afternoon I worked there, because the last ferry would go at 6.10pm and I was done with work at 7 :/)
And thanks! I want to study journalism when I'm done with school and then maybe write reviews, so I'm sure it'll be a great learning experience and a lot of fun :D

Sometimes quitting is the only way of moving forward - there are limits to how they can treat you as a person and how much BS you can take before it affects your personal life. I learned the hard way - I stuck at a job for 3½ years where all we ever got was yelled at and never did we do things right eventhough we made profit for the company. For 3½ years every day going to work I had stomache ache. Weekends it spent sleeping because the work drained me of all mental energy. I tried searching for other jobs too but never got any luck and I simply didn't have energy to do it more efficiently. My fiancee and familily for the last 6months were very worried about me - I was acting more depressed, silent and with 0 selfconfidence and selfesteem. They could see the job litterally breaking me down as a person doubting if I even was good at anything.
In January I said enough and quit. I couldn't stand going to work with stomach ache every day and being afraid of getting verbally attacked from the owner so often (he was like that to all other coworkers).
I never been so happy with that decision ! I feel I'm getting back to the person I was 3½ years ago ! a personality just laying dorment for so long. I got my energy back and am jobsearching again and confident in my skills again.

I still have contact with one of my colleagues who is 56 (I'm 33), and he's so unhappy with still being there, but he can't leave since he has a house to pay for an he's on his own. He's taking four different kinds of medicine now - medicine for his heart and too high blood pressure and also antidepressants. Something he started to take after getting this job and being stuck there for almost a decade.
We started out 15 people in the company when I started - when I quit a few months about they were 7 left.

My fiancee said to me that this company was "mentally raping" all it's employees and draining them for energy.

So my point is some jobs or rather work environsments are really REALLY bad for your health - so don't do the walk if you feel your loosing yourself !

Damn, that sounds horrible :/
It wasn't that bad, I just didn't really like pouring milkshakes on christmas eve

Anyway, guess who has a job interview this tuesday? :D
Hope I get the job, I could use some money, especially for a new rig ;)

Hi everyone !

Reading through this thread I realized i was in the same situation as you are a couple years ago. I built my first computer in January 2013, upgrading from a PC built in 2003. My life story is pretty much the same as yours. I'm 17 now and finally got my first decent gaming PC. I didn't know much about hardware back then, and built my rig from pocket money I got from working at McDonalds.

Here are the specs :

i7 3770K OC'ed @ 4.4GHz
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler
(Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-14 Push-Pull)
Asrock z77 Extreme 4 Motherboard
AMD Radeon 7870 GHz Edition (Sapphire)
Kingston HyperX 8gb RAM
CoolerMaster HAF 912 Case

You can also notice this is pretty unbalanced with the 3770k with a 7870 and budget stuff for every other component. If i could suggest anything for your future PC, it yould be to get an Athlon x4 750K for your CPU and a Radeon 7870 for you GPU. If you have a bit more money i would suggest an i5 4670K and a 760, as these can run every game out now at pretty decent settings.

Cheers

-Tyonar

I know that feeling !
I was lucky in one respect, I got voluntary redundancy.
