PS power cord

I've recently seen some very nice custom power supply power cables. Some of the higher-end power supplies have nice ones too like the EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 G2 Power Supply. I REALLY like that power cable!

Here is a pic of another, not sure it's for a power supply though:

I want to make a custom one myself for two reasons:
1. Aesthetics
2. Increased length

Braiding the cable is optional for me. My main focus is extending the length and replacing the ends.

I am super green when it comes to wiring. Recently I completed my first custom power wire from my fan controller to an 8 3-pin Mod My Toys PCB. That is ALL the wiring experience I have so far.

I have found a website that sells the ends I want and I'm sure getting the wire required should be straight forward.

I don't know if I'm searching the right words, but I'm having a hard time locating a written and | or video tutorial on how to properly do this. If anyone can point me in the right direction thanks in advance. I do remember viewing a build by Tiny Tom Logan that had a custom power cable. Hopefully he sees this and can help out as well.

Stay tuned...

are you talking mains power lead from the wall to the power supply? if so it depends where you live as to what pins are used for what

in the england the upper pin would be earth, the right pin would be neutral and the left pin would be live (looking at it from the pin side)

Yes, the main cord from the wall to the power supply. I am in California, United States, so American format.

so looking at it from the shoulder side of the plug you should have

left pin: - Neutral (white core)
right pin: - Live (black core)
round pin: - earth (green core)

Hey, where in California? I live in San Diego area - actually El Cajon, so may be able to help you out if you need a hand with sleeve or making longer cable

Yo! I'm in Riverside, CA down the street LITERALLY from March AFB. I did locate a full tutorial by Lustro0 Customs regarding this including sleeving. I should be able to hit the ground running with that. Thanks for your time sir and everyone else. Might be able to attack this today and post pics if I can get this :cussing: lawn mower to start!!

Stay tuned...

The mower didn't start...

The tutorial that I found does not specify what gauge wire to use for the power cord. I don't have a spare one to cut open and measure. Does anyone know what gauge wire to use??

id use 3 core 2.5mm flex

To make sure I have the correct understanding, the gauge of each wire inside is 13 right? My Corsair 1200AX has 14 AWG 2.08mm2 [I don't know how to type superscript here] printed on it. With that said, is a lil' overkill O.K.? The OEM cord that came with my PS is ruffly 4ft [not including the IEC connectors]. Should I be concerned constructing a 7-foot 13 AWG replacement cord?

yes mate AWG 13 is 2.5mm2

looking at them plug i think you maybe better off to turn something a little smaller other wise i think you may struggle to get the cable in them plugs.

you could look at using 1.5mm2 (although i dont know what gauge that is) but it might sill be a bit big. if thats to big you could use 1mm2 which will still be enough for what you want with a current ratting of 10 amps and a maximum wattage of 2400 which off the top of my head i think is gauge 16 but im not 100% sure

Hopefully the description is accurate. Says it accommodates cable size 10mm - 21mm. I'm not sure if you mean to small an opening through the plastic connector housing or the plug terminals?

Do you or anyone know or know how to calculate the O.D. of a 3 core 2.5mm2 13 AWG cord? I don't trust my math and I'm shopping for cable sleeving. I have no idea what size to purchase. Thanks in advance!

yes sorry i was not sure if the opening in the plug would have been big enough to take 2.5mm 3 core and if the terminals inside could clamp it. I don't know off hand the od of 2.5mm but 1.5mm 3 core flex is 10mm od

Small teaser...

I ended up purchasing a different set of IEC and plug connectors for the build. The plug from the previous pic is now dressing up my laptop power cord.

I have assembled and tested the power cord for the build. Waiting for the sleeve which should arrive tomorrow. I will complete it when I return from work. So far its lookin' REAL good without the sleeve.

Stay tuned...
