System is a bit hot

Hi guys,

I recently built this system:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/VsXFxY

It's stuffed in a Node 202 — which is lovely and compact.

I've been using it mostly with an Oculus Rift and it gets a bit warm.

CPU temps are usually about 85 or so —sometimes a bit more.

I kind of figure that little Noctua isn't really very happy.

Ideas on another case? Or any other suggestions would be really great.

That is a pretty badass SFF system you have there.

Are you running your CPU overclocked? Even if not that is a lot of CPU for such a small cooler.

I did have it at 4.5 —but it was getting a bit hot too quickly.

I would love to overclock it but I'd need another case. Not sure if there is a compact case that would allow a huge cooler.

no wonder its hot all that heat in such a small case either try and fit a 120 AIO in there or underclock the cpu a touch to bring temps down

I don't think an AIO will fit in there with the 1080 — it's a squeeze.

I was thinking of the Node 304 has a bit more room for a decent cooler? Or perhaps the Define Nano S for even more?

the component choice does not really suit such small case nanos s may be a better option just something to avoid starving the system of air and you should be good

You hit the nail on the head right there. It's a low profile cooler designed for 65W CPUs so sticking it in another case won't do much unless you get much better ventilation. I'm speaking from experience, I had an A8 6600K (100W CPU) cooled by the AMD version, only worked because I had another fan directly above it pulling more air in.

As it stands getting a new case won't give you much better results. you want a new CPU cooler, one capable of around 100W of cooling. Best option would be the Cryorig C7 as long as it will fit on the motherboard. I've altered your list to reflect that.

Thank you.

I understand that a new case alone won't solve my cooling.

I guess my question is; cut my loses and go for a bigger case and cooler? Or try a new cooler? (Which if it doesn't work will need a new case anyway) — I do fancy a bit of an overclock on it.

depends what your aim is if your after a small case to shove next to the TV then you just need a case with good airflow and a better cooler the CPU has a TDP of 91 watts so using a cooler for 60w tdp was always gonna be a problem.
If you aim is a gaming rig to be near or in a desk then bigger is most definitely better but again get good airflow

After posting I got reading around and have come up with a Node 304 plus Noctua D15 (S?) — it seems to fit.

That's not huge.

Thanks Rob.

Just got to work out if a D15S will fit - hoping that's the way forward.

I like the idea of that silence.

looks like they used an Evo 12 so just compare the sizes
According to product info
Coolermaster evo12 120 x 80 x 159 mm
noctua d15s 150 x 135 x 160 mm

That is a monster of a system in a Node 202! In the node 304, you could try using a Kraken X41 or X42. Not 100% certain the radiator will fit in that case but it's a thought.

Today I moved the whole system into a Node 304 case and swapped the cooler for a D15S.

I had to remove the included rear 140mm fan as this had clearance issues with the heatsink fins. I put a Noctua 120mm from the old case on to the outside of the case at the rear. I might swap this with a slim 140mm fan on the inside at some point.

With the case open and Prime 95 running I get a solid 75c after 20 minutes with the processor running at 4.5Ghz and 1.24V —this is with the CPU fan running at 80%.

I pushed it further to 4.8Ghz and get 77c

Even with the CPU fan at 50% the temps don't seem to go much further than that.

Pretty happy with that.

Sweet! I'm a big fan of the Node 304.
