Supply Problems for Conroe??

With all the good news flying around about Conroe, if you are like me your perhaps thinking 'whats the catch?'.

The Inq Reports:

GENTLEMEN, I was told this information directly from a reviewer that attended this event. This sort of deception needs to be exposed.

On May 22-23rd, Intel held an event in Munich Germany for the top European reviewers. Intel had on-hand about 15 Conroe 2.6GHz systems. The journalists were allowed to tinker with the systems and run a wide variety of benchmarks for the 2 days. Intel provided all hardware and software. The intent was for the reviewers to evaluate the systems and post a review on June 4th disclosing their benchmarking results.

Key Points

Intel notified them that the embargo date for their review was June 4th

Processor availability would be some time in July. Reviewers will receive review units "at a later date" (whether it's before or after June 4th is unknown, but it appears to be after June 4th since reviewers were instructed to post the review based on the event system evaluation)

This strategy by Intel demonstrates serious problems and desperation for Intel. Indicates low yields at 2.6GHz---Why can't Intel find a few hundred 2.6GHz processorsto send to reviewers?

Why does Intel have to control the benchmarking environment? It is not an objective review methodology with Intel controlling the systems and software. Credibility is seriously in question. Looks like another desperate paper launch so they can give the impression of keeping pace with AMD. More reacting to AMD.

Why has Intel adopted of late, the product launch strategy where reviews, product information, and performance analysis are posted many months prior to actual claimed availability? (Some of the Woodcrest systems used in the Intel Woodcrest benchmarking analysis won't be available until November 22nd)

Mav's Comments:

We have to take the inq with a pich of salt, if this is true though:

Could it be that the achilles heel of the new wonder chip will be a supply issue? The July Launch date looks as though we really could struggle to sse enough chips to keep up with demand - a bad sign for consumers as we all know (512MB 7800GTX anyone??) when a market leading product is in short supply, the price only goes one way and thats north :O

With the bench scores we`ve seen, I doubt if Intel are really stressing to keep on par with AMD, so to control the bench rigs seems a bit of a mute point.

The hype will have upped the demand to a pretty high level, I did kinda expect a paper launch. I`d say the only thing Intel has to counter from AMD is availability... AM2 was rolled out with little fanfare, but its available to the ones who want it.

Sure this was mentioned a while ago somewhere, something along the lines of limited availability until Q1 2007 or something. Is it also not the case that the XE versions of Conroe are available in limited numbers?

In a way it doesn't come as a surprise... Theres a LOT thats new in these chips, and the 4mb cache is probaly going to hurt yields somewhat (though, there are 2mb chips available which will to some extent cover this). Will be interesting to see how well these chips perform in 2mb versions, however thats probably for another thread...

The demand for these chips is going to be high based on the initial results, heres to hoping there's enough to meet the demand otherwise we may well see inflated prices

Been looking at this cpu and like what i see of it,my question is will it be worth the upgrade(system in sig) when it comes out.

Also will DFI bring out a motherboard to match this cpu.

Yehh the cache is going to hurt. Its not the case that cache is that hard to "fab" infact its probally the easiest bit of the chip, the problem is the cache interconnectors. Thats where the troubles going to come from.

That's good to know mate - can you enable the chips to run 1333mhz?

Intel Bad Axe rev.304 needs vdimm mod to 2.6V if run with D9....Still learn how to pinpoint tweaks on ddr2:)

I will post results with E6700ES

Is that the final release revision? I here a lot of Intel ES units not performaing as well as the retail units? If the retail versions are as good or better than this, then WOW!!!!

That being said - what a refreshing piece of hardware this will be, as momentus as the AMD A64 when ti forst came to life in its performance me thinks.

Can't wait to see your single stage runs my friend.

Good job so far :)

I have said before that the biggest problem for intel for the rest of the year is only itself, Conroe is way ahead of AMD, but with a slower ramp up than normal Intel is stuck trying to sell clearly inferior pentium chips.

Dumo - been looking at some conroe motherboards.

Most of them appear to have a number of caps really close the the socket - I know u have a chilly head on your phase - anything special you had to do for for mounting?

Cheers

Mav,

The board layout is much like any other LGA775 board, there's always caps that close to the socket.

Easiest thing to do is cut the doughnut so that it fits and then pack up around the socket with neoprene and raise the level of the board, that way the doughnut sits on top of the caps but still creates a good seal ;)

It's how we did it on the P5WD2 and LN2.
