Subwoofer Question (Car System)

In our new car, the sub woofer sort of rattles in the bag. Like it's mounted on top of the trunk wall, and whenever bassy music is played, especially loudly, the back of the car tends to rattle a bit, I watched the subwoofer today, and it didn't rattle at all. So, I'm thinking this is just normal, and the force from the sub just vibrates the area it's closest too. Is this correct?

I believe it would be the trunk rattling and not the sub.

Yea, that's what I was thinking actually it's not the trunk, it's the back of the back seats, since its mounted right next to them. But yea, so It's probably normal then right?

Yes, subs rattle teh crap out of loose things. Mine took out the screws that hold the lock in, and had to crawl in thought the boot to open it.

well they make sound dampening for car audio. Id look into that.

sound dampening is for poofs. use a wrapping paper tube or something and locate exactly where the sound is coming from, or make a sturdy enclosure to be sure its not the sub

Things like dynamat are a plain ripoff imo. Better off just ensuring everything is secure. If it persists youd need to get some sort of seal.

In my old car I put a sponge behind the reg plate to stop it from rattling. Then I got given about £200 of Dynamat and I stripped my car down and the sound difference was amazing - clarity and no rattles at all :)

Bass is actually multi-directional low frequency soundwaves; hence the reason you always hear the doof doof doof and less of the mids and treble. Plus it can impact on areas of the car that you wouldn't even think of. What sort of enclosure are you running the sub in? What size sub are you using? My first guess on the rattles you are hearing could perhaps be the vibration of the locking mechanisms , boot lid, window sashes in the doors or the number plate. The suggestion for baffling like dynamat or sponge is a smart one, money well spent imho. Just out of interest, what kind of bass do you prefer - booming or punchy? I personally prefer the power and punchiness of 2 x 10" kickers over a 12 or 15" sub.

I used to have 2 x 10"s and 1 x 12". Coupled with some serious amps it was pretty loud :D

I prefer a tight 12" in all honestly, if you insist a bit more you can get a 12" that puches you in the back :D

My single 12" does the job. Problem is when the boot is full of junk theres not enough air in it to work to its full potential:(

SO yea, thanks for all your help guys, but this is a HK mercedes system no way my dad will be modding :[ If I ever get the car (10-15 years) I will deffo mod it :P

Thanks for all you help! We have now concluded this is normal!

Not modding is fine but i suggest that you find what is vibrating and fix it otherwise you risk a bolt / screw falling out or some damage being done to something tiny (that in a Merc will cost a fair bit to replace)

I was looking the other day, and the thing that vibrates, is this plastic strip that supports the back trim, actually I have no clue what it does. It just rests in the back and the sub is directly below it, vibrating it.
