Static Electricity

Hello everyone
i may sound like a bit of a noob here!

i got into computers 3-4 years ago now and the first thing i learnt was to ground myself when working with hardware so to dissipate the static, i leave the power supply plugged in but the power switch in the off position. So now every time i'm working inside my case i make sure i am touching a bare metal section of the case. Also on my college computing course we are always being reminded about it and made to use ESD kits.

The question i have is with a new build with brand new parts all in the boxes what is the best way the eliminate the risk of static damage to the components??
i have noticed in Toms videos it doesn't seem like he grounds him self before opening a new motherboard etc...

my rule of thumb is dont wear anything with a rubber sole, then your the conduit to earth, so the static goes though your feet, and tbh the amount he moves his cases he will of dissapaited his static that way, i wear a static braclet connected to an earth plug when i do repairs but thats cos i have one knocking about.
but as you can see all of his stuff is fine
i think its mainly your mobo you need to worry about and just dont poke your curcuit boards so you dont bridge anything and you should be fine :)

Not saying its right to or saying that I condone it (not my fault if you do break something)

But i've never damaged anything through static damage in however many years I have been messing with components. Components are supposedly much more resilient nowadays and even at work (computer repair etc.) we don't use any anti static safety gear.

As long as you ain't in a full nylon jumpsuit (ali g style) or have just been jumping up and down on a trampoline you should be ok

hes been doing it for years think he knows what hes doing

im not saying he did not know, by the looks of it i just confirmed what he already knew. and your right mrapoc ive not damaged anything and ive been sorting pcs out for the best part of 7 years.

I guess its better to be safer than sorry with parts that cost hundreds of pounds/dollars what ever your currency computer things are quite costy.

and anyways i know things yet still always ask a second opinion

I do exactly nothing to ground myself xD
Touch the case when I begin, and that's about it :P

Never had anything die in 7 years, and hundreds of rebuilds :)
Having said that, I wouldn't wear socks on carpet and go sliding around on the floor or do anything else blindingly stupid; but generally you should be fine :)
