SSDs are expected to overtake hard drives in notebooks by 2018

About time this happened, there is pretty much no place for mech drives in notebooks anymore unless its for larger ones with an extra bay available to use as a storage drive. Even then..

Recently upgraded my 5 year old HP Lappy with a new adata 128gb ssd. Apart from the Windows 7 updating (yawn) it breathed new & faster life in the old gal.

I have not used a mechanical HD since 2010.

It is about time they disappeared from desktops too.

It's all about cost. I've got 3TB of mechanical storage in my PC for games plus 2TB to mechanical storage in a NAS for music and photographs. I am running an SSD boot drive in my rig that I got three years ago.

To replace the drive that has the most bottleneck, the 3TB, with an SSD would cost upwards of £1000 right now. Even if I accepted a loss of 1TB and went for 2TB of storage you're still looking upwards of £600.

I wish I could go with just SSD's, I really do, but it just isn't financially viable yet. I don't think we'll see SSD's come down to the point where larger drives are viable financially for at least five years yet.
