Hey all need some advice ive just started using my laptop again for car tuning software and other diagnostic equipment and thought it could benifit from a kick up the disk drive so ive been looking at the SSD,s but im a bit confused as my laptop is sata2 but most current drives are sata 3 will this create compatibility issues or will it just cap its maximum potential .
Size wise I only need 120GB as for the rest I want speed im not bothered about going for a budget drive as what ever suggestions are made I will most likely hunt down on fleebay .
so whats my best option.

The drive will operate through a SATA II port, but it's speed will be capped. I'm not sure how much by, but it will not be as good as it would be with SATA III, it will still be an improvement over a mechanical hard drive though.

It seems like it's your best option and to live with the fact that it won't be quite as fast as it would be with a SATA III motherboard.

yeah thought as much but then anything will be quicker then the 5400rpm drive it has at the moment

Agreed, and also if you get a new laptop at any point that does have SATA III ports, swap the SSD into that :)

The main thing is to avoid OCZ because many people report major faults within months, and RMA may no longer be possible because OCZ got bought out. I have an OCZ SSD, and I've been fine, but I might just have been lucky, who knows?

The most reliable brands are Corsair, Samsung, Crucial, and Kingston to name a few.

If this is going to be your sole drive (which I assume it is, since it's in a laptop), I'd recommend getting a 240GB/256GB drive rather than the 120GB/128GB one otherwise space will be quite limited. Unless you're satisfied that you'd have enough with 120GB/128GB from experience with what's currently on the hard drive now, then that's up to you.
