SSD RAID WITH TRIM Support

Hi,

I am currently looking to swap my ssd out and purchase 2 Corsair series 3 GT SSD and set them up in raid 0. From reading various website i understand that the latest intel drivers for the sata controller allow the trim command through the controller.

Questions i have are as followed

1. Will Trim work with two ssd set up in raid 0 ?

2. Can i clone my exsisiting hard drive then migrate onto the newly formed raid ssd set without any issues ?

Trim wont work in Raid mate however if the SSD's support native garbage collection then that will work instead

as for the second question I always find it better to back things up and do a fresh install especially to an SSD, as it will not only get rid of old files or ones that are not needed but allow you to install only things you want. in some cases it can BSOD when transferring it did with one of myne so best to just clean install the machine mate

thanks my current setup is intel sata controller set up to raid mode and ssd attached to raid controller as single device and 2 2tb in raid 1 array via intel raid software, it works ok however when i set back to achi mode it brings up mbr error as it seems intel raid array is bootable.

Any advise what am doing wrong ?

Any time this has happened to me is generally because it has either stored the MBR on one of the other hard drives which when you change back from raid it cant read the harddrives which case the error.

Generally when I install an OS I do it with the single drive first (or raid if you are creating 2 disk out of 2) this means the MBR is stored onto the first drive once windows is installed and running I then fetch in the other hard drives which can combat the error if you change drives or even raid them

From memory i belive i did install windows on the SSD first in ACHI mode then set the controller to raid and installed the 2 2TB in raid configuration.

Any suggestion on resolving this ?

it may have changed where the MBR is stored when you have changed it to raid im not entirely sure on that mate but it simply sounds like the raid has moved the MBR to somewhere on the 2TB drives

there is a way to sort it by putting your windows 7 disk back in and following the guide in the link (was going to type it all out myself but remembered where this guide was)

try doing this with just the SSD connected

Yup, those are some great points CoolerMaster Fezz.

It's better to back up everything that's important and then transfer the data onto your freshly installed Windows on the x2 SSDs in RAID. The Corsair Force Series GT has the newer Sandforce chips, so it has built in garbage collection. This means even without TRIM support on RAID, the built in house cleaning will be active in the background.

It's probably good to leave your system on overnight once in a while and have yourself logged off from all accounts so the garbage cleaning will be most effective when there are less things being run in Windows.
