Spec Me A Monitor

Dicehunter

Resident Newb
Ok so my cousin is buying her son a new monitor but has no clue what to buy him, For some context his rig consists of a 7700K, 1080 founders edition *non Ti*, 16GB memory.

He spent about a year and a half saving up for all of his stuff and as he's only 16 that's quite the feat, He had jobs everywhere, Cleaning, Doing gardening, Delivery jobs etc...a real trooper.

Anyway, At the end of it he was only left over with about enough to afford a really low end crappy 1080P panel, I advised against buying it so he has all of his gear but no display, Currently playing on an old HDTV.

So, Me and my cousin have been discussing which monitor to get him, Money isn't really an issue as it's not like we're going to pick out a Dell 8K ^_^

He plays A LOT of twitch shooters but also loves his RPG's like The Witcher 3 etc....

I was thinking of advising her to go for the Asus PG279Q 1440P 165Hz G-Sync IPS but as I and many people I know have had really bad luck with Asus panels in the past I wouldn't want to see him having all these problems too with the annoyance of dealing with Asus CS etc...unless of course if that situation has changed and Asus' quality control has gotten better ?

Can anyone recommend a good solid panel, Preferably 1440P 144Hz+ that has a vendor with a good reputation and quality control ?

Considering you have changed your monitors more than many of us I would have thought you have more experience, better feel and general idea of what to go for more than us. Especially if money is not an issue.

TN is better for twitch shooters and high refresh. IPS achieves high refresh rates in most cases from Overclocking.

HP Omen 32. It's "only" 70hz but it's the best monitor out there for the cash right now.

Looks good, Although only 75Hz, I'll keep an eye out on it though thanks bud :)

Is there a budget Dicey?

Under a grand preferably ^_^

Well I've only had experience with Asus and Dell so far, With Asus I swapped my monitor out 7 times due to faults, Although I'm curious to see if this has changed with the newer IPS model and Dell is good but the 144Hz monitors I was looking at seem to be EOL which could mean an IPS variant may be on the horizon.

IPS in some tests has been shown to match TN in terms of responsiveness, The Tech Chap did a good video comparing the PG278Q and PG279Q, The IPS version actually had better responsiveness albeit only by a tiny tiny margin.

I have just gotten a PG278QR
Read that you might be unlucky with the 279Q with uneven lighting, and I didn't want to spend the time returning it.
But when he is a gamer definitely a high refresh rate monitor.

I owned three different pg279q 165hz monitors. I had back light uniformity problems on one, quite a few stuck pixels and a yellow tinge on a second and the third had contstant pixel clock related inversion problems. I know from speaking to ASUS that they had a firmware fix for the pixel inversion problems finally a short while ago. I got tired of messing about. I ended up getting an Acer XB271hu which after some tweaking and calibrating properly is a cracker. I actually ordered two and kept the one i liked the most. I have heard of similar problems with the Acer though. Both the acer and asus use the same panel but the acer has a different coating. Im only using mine at 144hz but its a great monitor and its cheaper than the asus

Disagree with them on that then or they had a golden monitor. I had both and the 278Q was much better. I stuck with the 279Q just because I wanted to try IPS. It's grown on me and now I have the 348Q now but as far as response goes, the 278Q was way superior for me.

I still think TN panels are the way to go, either AOC predator, or ASUS Swift. I think the dead pixel craze has disappeared now.

No, what? I'm still here dude

Well we ended up going with the Asus PG279Q and really wish she had chosen something else.

Like all Asus monitors I've had experiences this with, This one came with a fault, The DP port has a fault so you need to hold the cable at a certain way or there is no signal.

Seriously, Asus sort yourselves out, It's not funny anymore.

Glad this isn't my money otherwise I'd be more than annoyed.

I feel your pain. I had three screens that took up far too much time and effort with multiple faults. I really wish Asus would sort their quality control out. I dont understand how a premium product with a premium price can come to market without the panels leaving the factory fully tested and in perfect condition every time.

So I've been looking at the PG279Q for my cousins son and after watching a few reviews it seems solid enough and when the monitor came out it was around £650 according to the review which I think is hefty but ok for such a monitor.

I just looked at OCUK and nearly choked, It's now £899, What's with the immense £250 price increase ?

Do Asus come round to your house, Set it up, Give you a back massage, Take you out for dinner and get naughty with you under the sheets for that amount extra ?

Honestly, I'll most likely never buy an ROG monitor again. They just plain suck for the immense insane price that you pay for it. It should be flawless for the amount really.

My PG278Q has started to fail on me as well, with what War I believe said is the power supply that has gone for me. Need to pull out and stick the power cord back in for it to even turn on.

I am amazingly surprised as how a big and both well known and well regarded company, has literally released such a piece of crap of monitors, especially at this price point. I'm just literally speechless.

So I've been looking at the PG279Q
The Asus is £740 on Amazon.

The Acer version is £585 from Amazon (you have to scroll down to select to purchase directly from Amazon). It has the newer, slimmer panel, but a poorer OSD, and garish "Predator" logo.

I did contact amazon via phone and they are sending another new one out tomorrow to replace the slightly faulty one but even the guy on the phone said after I explained it to him that they should just take 2 minutes to check them at the factory, Plug it into a PC/workstation, Check the connectors aren't faulty, Check for dead/stuck pixels and backlight bleed then when you've spent a grand total of 2 minutes on it send it off to packing.

It would save so much ballache for the customer with constant replacements.

Yep, I'll happily buy ROG motherboards, GPU's and even their peripherals but I'll stick to Dell or even Asus non ROG for my monitors as although Asus ROG monitors look great and have brilliant features like IPS/165Hz/G-Sync etc... the quality control is utter pants.

I'm going to talk her into getting a Dell S2716DG *27" 1440P TN 144Hz G-Sync* if the replacement is also faulty and as it's not ROG it's pretty much guaranteed to be pristine ^_^

Yup, I'm with you on that one.

And also regarding that Dell... I'd think twice on that monitor. I have tried 2 now and it just has bad BLB dude. And the base which screws into the height adjustable "arm", that connects to the base and at the other end the monitor.
The base to that "arm" felt like a toy, not quality at all... If you try to tighten it by hand, the small metal thingy which helps with the screwing, that just completely bended. Just didn't feel like quality to be honest. And the "arm" felt like really cheap plastic.

Overall, much nicer and I'd choose it over an ROG PG monitor any day. But it felt rather cheap for the high price you pay for it really.

Just giving you a heads up mate. You may not experiencing it the same way I did though anyhow. Hope it works out for you guys if you do decide to order it :)

Interesting, Dell do some of the highest quality monitors I've ever used.

Yep we use them in work. Everyone supplied with 2 Dell 27inch screens. And i never see any returns or pending issues when I pop by the IT dept.

I see a ton of HP laptops in for repair though. Now that is bad quality for you. My has been repaired 3 times in the past 9 months due to hardware failure.

I dont think ive ever known anyone to have such bad luck with ASUS monitors as dice has had. I have bought 3 from them, and all were perfect albeit ONE dead pixel which was fine for me anyway. And now Dice has a family member with problems too?

They clearly don't like him.

Lolz ^_^

It's just luck of the draw and I don't draw well :p

The brand new replacement came 20 minutes ago, Setup, Wiggled the plugged in cables, All good, Checked for dead or stuck pixels, All good, Overclocked to 165Hz.

All good so far, I'll be dropping it off and setting it up in an hour or so while he's gone swimming, I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction when he walks in :D
