Skull's 1st proper Mod

Ok, since im new here, i thought i'd let you see what i've been up to, see if i can earn some kudos:rolleyes: , lol. I recently started my first mod, and my 3rd PC build (if you see what i mean). I started with this......

1.jpg

A fairly standard 5 year old A-Open Server tower. Made from a relatively sturdy gauge of steel, and more than its fair share of Biegeness!! Yum!8)

It used to be the home of my First PC, a slightyl overclocked old P3 on an A-Bit Mobo, with a FX5700LE and 512 mb of SDRam. I sold on the guts to ebayers and a fellow CPCFF member for a server, and set about making this tower the future (now current) home for my next project.

I started by dissassembling the case into its seperate parts, HDD cages (2 of), and motherboard tray and panels.

I then cleaned those bits that would fit in the dishwasher (much to the dismay of the Wife and to the amusement of some fellow forumites) but, i thought, it needs to be clean for painting and this will pretty much do it.

Unfortunately the Chassis was to big to fit in, so i just cleaned it using a prepaint solution.

Next came the painting, i hung the parts up in my garage, and laid down lots of light coats of Halfords best (primer then Citroen Metallic Blue).

I also cut a 120mm hole in the front panel, to allow air-flow into the bottom of the case, as i have blue LED 120mm fan to fill it. This panel remains unfinshed,

As does the panel that will eventually become my window panel. I have some perspex for this, and plan to cut out a design from the panel, and have the perspex mounted behind the cutout, then heat it so it 'forms' through the design. I still have to come up with a definative design for the window, so this panel remains unfinished.

After this it was time to do the panels. I chose another fandabydozy Halfords paint, this time an Irredescant Colour changing paint. Qute expensive, @ over £50 for just the base coat and top coat. I also had to buy special primer and Lacquer. Panels where coated in a heavy plastic type paint, i used a good old electric sander to remove this and then used a pre-paint solution to clean off the dust and grease. Hung up the panels ( only the top one and the one for behind the MObo) and began a week and a half of laying down light coat after light coat of primer-basecoat-topcoat and finally lacquer. Leaving approximately 8-12 hours between coats.

I am currently using this in its incomplete form, having sold on my old case, and it's allowed me to spot a few things that can be improved, and changed. Overall though, im pretty pleased with the paint, although it really needs sunlight to make it worthwhile .The case has the potential to last a long time, as there is huge amounts of space inside it. So, it'll suit me fine when i upgrade to H20 this year.

That's top notch modding there - you can see such a huge difference between the first pic and the last! :D

Was that paint specially mixed at Halfords?

They sell it in liquid or Aerosol form, but, yeah, they mix the paint pigment into a suspension, then pump it into an Aerosol can. Its around £40 a litre for the topcoat (fancy changing pigment) on its own. So i decided to go for the can. Next time i'll just buy the liquid and borrow my brothers compressor and spraygun. The aerosol is fine, and has a really good nozzle that emits a fan of spray. It can also be adjusted to control the orientation of the fan. They have 3 different kinds of this type of paint. And it looks great on, better in person, if you see what i mean. I still have to fit some new feet and finish sanding and painting the front panel. Also have to decide on the final details, switchgear and finishes. I want to install some kind of 'turbine' nozzle for the blowhole, so it resembles the front of a jet engine, but nothing too gaudy.

I have some LED's to fit and also two 30cm Blue CCFL's to fit too. So, it should end up being tidy enough.

Ps, sorry, forgot to say thanks for the compliment. Although, looking at the modding going on here, i have to play hard at catchup!!

The primer should allow it to bond without any difficulty :)

I think this case needs water cooling to really shine, you can't beat those pipes with liquid flowing through with conventional air cooling!

hey skully, nice to see you on here dude.

Its looking good as ever, are you going to do the same with the front or hve some mesh, or other plan?

can you get this colour at halfords ?

blue into green :)

sweet mod you got there... 120.3 in the top and thats your main battle solved :p

I think I've seen this colour at Halfords. They had a few shapes sprayed in three different flip colours, and I think that was one of them. The larger stores say that they can mix any colour! :)

Thanks loads guys. It means a lot to hear this:)

@Jellybeard : yes, thats the other colour i was thinking of getting, plumped for the red/green/ purple one. Still a hard choice.

@scorchio : i got a specific PLastic Primer, so im hoping it'll go well.

@K.I.T.T and bennywidag, glad to be here. Im hoping tapping into the knowledge and experience here will add to the evolution of the Rig. As for the front, im not sure, as the original panel has little to distinguish it, so im toying with the idea of making a custom front panel. Maybe out of Perspex and having it painted with the same paint, but on the inside, with some areas left clear, with the same smoked/ mirror film on the inside. I just think, now, that it would just look like the old one, but painted, if i used the original panel.

@Stocky : Im with you on that, especially as im planning a smoked/ mirrored window. I want this thing to look lean and powerfull in an Architectural way, and i had thought of mounting a 120.3 in the top area, seeing as it's really just a space for the on/off switch and the floppy.

Will be starting on finishing it once i get back on-shore, next week. So i hope to post some more progress then.

glad to be here!!:)
