Ok, since im new here, i thought i'd let you see what i've been up to, see if i can earn some kudos
, lol. I recently started my first mod, and my 3rd PC build (if you see what i mean). I started with this......
A fairly standard 5 year old A-Open Server tower. Made from a relatively sturdy gauge of steel, and more than its fair share of Biegeness!! Yum!8)
It used to be the home of my First PC, a slightyl overclocked old P3 on an A-Bit Mobo, with a FX5700LE and 512 mb of SDRam. I sold on the guts to ebayers and a fellow CPCFF member for a server, and set about making this tower the future (now current) home for my next project.
I started by dissassembling the case into its seperate parts, HDD cages (2 of), and motherboard tray and panels.
I then cleaned those bits that would fit in the dishwasher (much to the dismay of the Wife and to the amusement of some fellow forumites) but, i thought, it needs to be clean for painting and this will pretty much do it.
Unfortunately the Chassis was to big to fit in, so i just cleaned it using a prepaint solution.
Next came the painting, i hung the parts up in my garage, and laid down lots of light coats of Halfords best (primer then Citroen Metallic Blue).
I also cut a 120mm hole in the front panel, to allow air-flow into the bottom of the case, as i have blue LED 120mm fan to fill it. This panel remains unfinshed,
As does the panel that will eventually become my window panel. I have some perspex for this, and plan to cut out a design from the panel, and have the perspex mounted behind the cutout, then heat it so it 'forms' through the design. I still have to come up with a definative design for the window, so this panel remains unfinished.
After this it was time to do the panels. I chose another fandabydozy Halfords paint, this time an Irredescant Colour changing paint. Qute expensive, @ over £50 for just the base coat and top coat. I also had to buy special primer and Lacquer. Panels where coated in a heavy plastic type paint, i used a good old electric sander to remove this and then used a pre-paint solution to clean off the dust and grease. Hung up the panels ( only the top one and the one for behind the MObo) and began a week and a half of laying down light coat after light coat of primer-basecoat-topcoat and finally lacquer. Leaving approximately 8-12 hours between coats.
I am currently using this in its incomplete form, having sold on my old case, and it's allowed me to spot a few things that can be improved, and changed. Overall though, im pretty pleased with the paint, although it really needs sunlight to make it worthwhile .The case has the potential to last a long time, as there is huge amounts of space inside it. So, it'll suit me fine when i upgrade to H20 this year.
