Sitting on a time bomb

Ok, I have one of these cheap 500W PSUs. To be more exact its a £13 job from ebuyer, made by casecom who apparently are a division of Encer.

Im not expecting it to last long but i really cant afford a new one for as long as it lasts.

What can i do to save my other components if/when it goes boom?

Would raising it up out the top of the chasie on top of an old 235W i have lying around help? Or build a little platform enclousre thing?

Its acutaly running quite cool to the touch at the moment but when i add my PCI-E gfx card the next few weeks...

O no...not one of those PSU's.

Watch out for a high pitched buzzing, once that happens it has less than 30 minutes to live - trust me - it happened to me :)

Oh and by the way, that PSU is actually about 250w (it says somewhere on the label i think).

That was quick lol. It's running almost silent at the moment. How bigger boom are we talking? i like my eyebrows... And my 64 3500 even more...

Well mine didnt go boom, it just kinda buzzed for a while, then went ZAP!

Didnt kill any of my components tho which was good, but dont count your chickens that you'll be as lucky...

Just listen out for the buzz of death.

Dam loud fans. I think im going to jack it up out my chasie for now.

How much are you asking vandam?

erm, want a hiper type-r 580watt modular psu? im selling mine :)

If you do buy a PSU that is the one to get in my opinion, I had a cheapy Qtec 500W which lasted me a good 6 months and never broke but i couldnt resist going modular.

I got the blue one

That sounds perfect :). Would you E-mail me details? (Postage costs, prefered/accepted payments etc, and a picture if i could trouble you:D )

*snipz*

Thanks a million

I had a similar catastrophic event take place with an old Aspire 500 watt (not the one I gave to you, WC Annihilus). It wasnt physical damage that screwed me over that time, (in fact I suppose the aluminum sides were strong enough to keep anything but smoke from flying out of the thing) but rather the voltage spike that came BEFORE the powersupply went boom. Sorta terrifying afterwards, it sounded as if my Smartfan 2 hit some ridiculously high voltage

Did it actualy damage your componets then Ubermouser? MY cheapass one is now sitting atop my chasie, a good 6-7cm from any compontents. I mite mod the case a bit for extra protection.

Ham, i've only just picked up on this, but have you moved your PSU outside your case to protect your components from damage?

If so (rofl), i wouldnt worry so much about the PSU catching fire or blowing up, but more about the massive electical spike the PSU is likely to deliver your components when it dies....Thats the killer.

in fact id rather the psu blew up inside the case so that i am somewhat sheided from any shrapnel that may decide to blow off it in the explosion.

Ah... geuss who feels like a retard now:( .... OK, is there any kind of breakers you can get? surge protectors? Anything atall...? I need as much protection as i can get because if my current components blow up/melt/get fried i have to revet to a P3 750 based system in here and playing my games on the family XP2200 based system

I'm afraid not. Surge protectors will only protect a surge from your wall socket from frying everything.

When a PSU goes tits up, it will just generally send a large spike straight to your motherboard and any other components plugged into it.

Good PSU's will _generally_ cut the power before anything like this happens, but don't rely on it. Components in your PC are VERY sensitive to voltage increases.

Dam... Im just going to have to prey then arn't I. and Hope vandam will sell me his.

Yep, thats your best bet. Don't let me scare you too much tho, Dav0s has had an ebuyer PSU for a while now without any problems. It just depends how lucky you are i guess :)

Well I'm not very lucky atall, so i bought vandams:). No fryed components for me! Also ill be able to actualy plug in my second disk drive, TV card, floppy drive, extra stick of ram, 2 more fans and X1600 without worrying the whole thing is just gonna flop and crash.
