Should I go GTX 260+ SLI or GTX 295?

hey guys, i'm currently building a gaming rig, but i'm kinda stuck at the gpu part and was wondering if i should stick to the original plan and get the GTX295 with a P45 board (namely gigabyte's EP45-UD3P) or get the GTX260+ in SLI and go with a nforce board. any feedback would be helpful. :)

yeah, i was thinking of going i7, but i don't really have enough to go ddr3. plus getting an i7 mobo here would be pritty expensive. also, i know this is a wee bit off-topic but what ram would you guys recommend to go with my mobo? i was thinkin' some mushkin xp2 8500 4GB.

GTX 295 or GTX280 SLI....but bear in mind your resolution as to wether it would justify buying that solution.

bets rams tend to be OCZ Reapers and Corsair Doomiantors but there are many others OZC are about the best value vs performance

i'll be running on a 24" dell 2408wfp hence the gtx295. that's about all it can take anyway due to the lack of frame buffer.

I'd choose the GTX295 instead of the GTX260 SLI, as sometimes there can be scaling issues in SLI. The 295 is also based on newer technology. As for RAM Corsair Dominator, OCZ Platinum or SLI and Patriot Extreme or Viper should be more than sufficient.

295 should be more powerfull, consume less, have lower temps then the twin 260 (even if they are the 55nm ones).

It should cost about the same, but think about it, you can always grab a 9800-something, put it along side the 295 and tell it to do PhysX. With a dual 260 this could be problematic depending on your mobo setup and layout.

GTX295, doesn't need such a stupidly powerful PSU, and works out about the same price, you'r call, I would be happy with one GTX260 myself, and if it stuggles months down the line you could add another, but I suppose if you have the cash to blow the now, go for the GTX295

If the choice is between twin 260+'s and one 295, I would choose the 295. It (over)clocks very well, it does have the full 240SP cores, does OK with thermals. The memory subsystem is crippled the same way on both.

So it will be better then the two 260+'s while being more compact. I am also looking into getting one 295 and use it with my old 8800GTS (as dedicated PhysX).

Pricewise you should break about even.

It seems like a dream now, but in one year (maybe sooner) a new single chip card will emerge that will be more powerful even then the 295. And having one already, you can buy another one and SLI them. But only if the drivers will work better with quad SLI by then. The two 260+'s will not give you this choice.

To summarize, I choose the GTX295.
