GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 in SLI or rx 480

I have a dilemma. Im gaming at 1440p and was going to upgrade to 2 x gtx 1080 cards but after seeing the performance on my system of one GTX 1080 I borrowed for a weekend, its total overkill.
I had the money saved for a couple of GTX 1080s so cost isnt really an issue. I will be buying waterblocks for the card/s as well. I might upgrade to a 4k screen when the refresh rates get above 90hz

Im debating whether to get a single gtx 1080 or buy a couple of gtx 1070s? I know the issues with SLI and scaling in some games. Im interested in your opinions.

The other option i have is too pick up a couple of rx 480s when they arrive and save my money for big pascal/vega. I have a screen that has freesync (MG279q)

I should add im not in a huge rush as my other system has a fury X

A wise move would be to wait for the RX480 reviews so you have a decent comparison

just my two penny's worth :)

Wait and see how the RX 480 performs. By then there will be plenty of custom GTX 1080 and 1070 GPUs out there and you can buy what you think is best.

Rumors are 2x480 = 1x1070 so depends how much grunt youre after and if all the leaks are true

Interesting. I'm actually beginning to think It would be wise to wait a while longer until the market had settled a bit and the Rx 480 reviews are out.

Gruntwise I have a 144hz screen and a bad case of screen induced motion sickness so the more frames the better

Always try and go for a single more powerful card, Yes you will pay more but it's less power used, Less heat pumping out, No multi GPU issues, Less cables to tidy etc....

Aren't two decent 480s going to be ~500$? That's not even cheaper.

Depends.

According to the AMD conference 2 x 480's will cost $199 each and offer the same performance as 1 x 1080.

So it's $400 for the 2 x 480's vs $700 for 1 x 1080 or $380 for the 1070 which will have less performance than both.

Time will tell though.

$199 for a 4GB card though, $250 for 8GB and probably a little extra for a decent cooler. Let's say $230 for an aftermarket 4GB card, that's FE money. The 2x 480 = 1x 1080 thing is very questionable, they claim that because of an Ashes of the Singularity benchmark, in which they stack up the best against nvidia. A Fury beats a 980ti in that benchmark and that card can't compete with a 980ti. 1070 performance seems a lot more likely.

If the performance of 2 480s is equal to a 1070 then I think I would be more inclined to buy a 1070. I wonder what the price of partner cards for the 1070 will be? Judging by the price of the board partners gtx 1080s I suspect they will be coming close to the 400 pound mark. Two 1070s would only 150 more than some of the top end 1080s

I tend to prefer a fast single card as opposed to dual cards simply because of less headaches. Dual card support isn't always guaranteed in games and even when they are, it sometimes takes a couple driver revisions to get smooth operation. So my vote would be a single 1080.

Im thinking i might just pick up a single 1080 and then watercool that and save the rest of the money for big pascal or vega. I have been playing with a GTX 1080 flanders edition today and i am getting a great framerate at 1440p. The more i play with the more i want one.

Good idea. If you want your moneys worth though, you should hold out till at least the next gen.

This gen from both AMD and nVidia have pretty much just relied on the new process. Sort of like Intels former Tick Tock.

I'm thinking of selling my FX and pick up a 480 if it reviews well. Then save up for Vega with the extra cash I get from selling. I think it would be worth it. Could probably get two and still come out with spare change

Haha, maybe I should rethink not getting a trifire Fury X machine :D

Gave up a while back cause there didnt seem to be enough stock going around for me to cherry pick a set.

I went through three different furys Xs until I gave up and put a block on it for the Mrs' PC

Instead of going for a gtx 1080 i bought two gtx 1070s gaming X from MSI
