Should I go for it?

Quick question: Today on Newegg they have a 128GB Vertex 4 for 80 bucks, which is a sick deal. I already have a 128GB Vertex 4 which I don't think is enough, so I was going to sell it and upgrade to a 256GB drive, maybe Vertex maybe not. But with such an awesome deal should I just buy this and RAID 0 them?

That is an awesome deal imo, but I'm not sure if you should go for it, seeing as OCZ have a really bad rep. How are you finding your current Vertex 4? At 80 bucks it's a steal so I don't know what to tell you :/

Considering OCZ are the most unreliable drives around - with around a 15% failure rate -
If you RAID0 them, there would be a 30% chance of it going wrong...

Too big a risk IMO

Yeah I don't really know what to do. I'm trying to weigh out the pros and cons but it's tough. I'm loving my current Vertex 4, but I know OCZ doesn't have the best record and putting two of these babies on RAID 0 doubles my chance of failure. Also, I lose TRIM capabilities as well... But this saves me money in the long run and I wouldn't have to sell my current drive... Oh geeze.

@james - That 15% failure was for older Sandforce drives. The Vertex 4's really do have a pretty good record.

I thought it was like 13.something% overall for OCZ?
I wasnt being drive specific - just generally speaking.

At the end of the day (not to sound like the people on Jeremy Kyle) I wouldn't want anything over like 5% myself, but it's up to you

OK don't think I'm gonna do it. I don't need the storage right away and SSD prices are gonna keep dropping. I'm also sinking enough money into this whole water cooling thing already *sigh*

If anyone's looking for an SSD though, this really is a good deal!

The Vertex 4's are relatively new so I don't think they would have been included in the failure rate statistic?

It's still very risky though :/

No, they wont have been - but because of that you cant really base any stats on those drives alone, and instead only have past history of OCZ to look at.

The OCZ drives that failed in the first place often failed after around 2 months.

I personally wouldnt buy anything SSD wise that hasnt been trialed and tested for a long period of time.

IMO - sell the Vertex 4, and get a 256gb Crucial M4

Yes, but if you got the M4, our logic of: '3570k, GD65, 670, Crucial M4 /end' would apply completely to you :P

Just kidding, whichever is cheapest between the Samsung and Crucial at the time of purchase - cant go wrong with either.

Yeah good points. Reviews don't take into account long term use, so OCZ have to prove themselves in that respect to be a viable SSD option for us "enthusiasts" :p
