Hi my work needs a new server for mainly file hosting between ourself's i have never had to build a server so im not really sure what specs we would need etc for it to run fast so some tips would be greatful.

Cheers

Just filesharing? Will it be hosting any apps? Will you have a domain? What's the budget?

Yeah what hmmblah said

What is the reason for the server?

File sharing?

Email host?

What is your work?

Budget?

What network has your work got?

will it need a back up solution?

Will it need to be kept safe like a UPS?

Will it be shut down at night like a desktop computer?

Why dose your work "need" a server? Can a NAS meet your needs?

The Reason is to share work between our company we are a graphic/web design based company so we share all our through the master server.

File Sharing is a must.

Email, no.

Graphic/Web Designers

We have a wired network with wireless capabilities. (Quite small around 8 computers)

It would need a back up solution raid would be sufficient.

Wont be need to kept any where so can run in a desktop case.

It will be on 24/7

It wont be a proper server it will maybe host some websites but highly unlikely but it will be running linux and would be needed to perform at good transfer speeds when working with high quality imagery/psds/videos etc.

Budget isnt much of an issue but below £500 would be good with around 4TB space (2tb for backup 2tb for usuage)

Mostly for transfering working between the computers and for keeping a solid backup.

Thanks for your help

Raid isn't a backup. Don't count on it for that. It's only there to protect from a HDD failure. If you were to get a virus or some other software problem, your "backup" would be useless. Get a USB or eSATA external drive.

I'd probably build an atom based server or an AMD server. Get good quality parts of course, but they don't need to be high end at all if you are only doing some file sharing. I'd get a good quality RAID controller too, but even that isn't a must for the work load. Just be sure whatever you get has drivers for whatever Linux distro you plan on using.

Someone on here had recommended the HP Microservers. I am in love with these units. Still trying to find an excuse to buy one.

Put in a few hard drives and you'd be all set. I usually stick with WD RE4 drives, but this is going to probably make you go over budget.

I think you should consider a NAS for what your goal is, th one i suggested is the higher end model for 4 bay NAS.

Qnap TS-439 ProII+

A NAS would give you your file sharing needs, HTTP server, FTP server and a whole list of features and you could plug in a USB HDD for a back up solution.

Buying a real server with server quality parts for a business would be pretty expensive.

One thing with those NAS devices is they have very very slow write speeds for small files. They transfer large files at Gbit speeds, but if you have lots of small files, the speeds go down to bytes a second. I have 5 different QNAPs for work for various projects and I've gotten around the slow write speeds by compressing the backups on my servers before actually copying them to the qnap. This shortened the backup times from 10hrs+, to under 30 minutes (per server). I backup roughly 200GB a night.

Thanks alot for the feedback i think we are going to go with a HP Server that hmmblah posted and upgrade the capacity from their.
