SCSI Ultra 320 advise needed...

Hi guys,

Im looking into purchasing some Ultra 320 Scuzzy's and raiding them, just wonder what is a good PCI controler as i have no idea...

one of the best is adaptec 2916 i should have a raid card this week i have been doing some tests and my scsi drives beat my raptors by miles you can pick up a adaptec card for as little as tenner second hand but dont by a dell adaptec raid card they ony work in dell servers i have two of them already

tbh, why would you want to put scsi over 32-bit PCI anyway? 3*SATA II drives in RAID0 can give scsi drives a run for their money - as can any SATA setup on PCI32-bit. Admittedly, maybe not in absolute raw I/O and access time terms, but still rather good and cheaper.

Unless you have a PCIX slot I wouldn't really bother.

Although, as you have a single GPU, let's see if we can find you a PCIe card - like the model from intel: SCSI RAID 2CH U320-PCI X8 128M mode. I can't really find anything else unless you go serial attached scsi :)

I whipped up google and did a quick search. Would an Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S be what you are looking for? It seems like it has all the features you need.

Actualy i was looking at this one from adaptec..

The E's the Graphics the X isn't, I think... I read something like that anyway, and they're not to be mistaken!

I just invested in:

ADAPTEC 29320ALP PCI SCSI HOST CONTROLLER

Dunno how good it is though...

no, that's not entirely right stocky

PCIe can be used for anything - it is currently used for video cards, and RAID cards. It will accommodate the phsyx engine card and eventually sound cards...but don't hold your breath. So E isn't just graphics.

PCI-X is basically a souped up faster clocked 64-bit PCI slot at 133Mhz. The next slot down is 64-bit 66Mhz PCI. Then in the SAME family is the PCI 32-bit at 33Mhz.

Animal: you could probably install that card in a 32-bit slot, but what's the point? get a PCIE-8x form factor controller and get SCSI and no bus bottlenecks.

PCI 32-bit to PCI-X are really the same bus technology whereas PCIe is the totally new standard that shares very little with the old stuff in terms of how data is moved.

well basicly im looking for the best card controler i can buy to go with my mobo, do u have any u could suggest..?

yeah thats the single channel version of the 1 i thought about.. when do u get it m8..?

Sometime this week in the post...

I thought I would step into the world of SCSI, so ignore everything I say, as it's new to me - (cheers for clearing that up Chris! )

I'll hopefully be up to date with all this dual core stuff after xmas, but thought I'd learn SCSI for now :D

Nope, please tell me I don't need one

I'm running a P4C800-E Deluxe...

However, if this is the case, I think I'll splash out on a new system - all this old tech I'm using is starting to get annoying

EDIT: I mean before if I typed :) or :( or :D, it would show a smily, but doesn't at the mo...

(I appreciate the work btw, the improvements are looking really good)

now that i've looked, all the PCIe cards are serial attached scsi and well into the $1000 dollar territory...adaptec have everything you need again - just browse their site.

I think mine is just normal (old) PCi...

Well I'll find out soon enough. I'm hoping to run in RAID-0, I hope it works though.
