Say hello to ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 780 6GB with 0dB Fans?

A 6GB GTX 780! With a 0dB fan! Is this too good to be true?

First i'll say this, no, the Strix does not have a magically 100% silent fan but it should be quieter than the average GPU with ASUS' new 0dB fan feature. With this feature your GPU's fans will be turned off at idle and moderate GPU load, only turning on while gaming or other higher load senarios.

This is quite similar in theory to many modern high efficiency PSUs, like the Corsair AX1500 or RM series PSUs, where your system will remain fanless and silent at idle, only making a noise when you provide your system with a high load.

As we can see from the pictures here ASUS have abandoned their CoolTech fan, in favour of two more traditional fan designs and features an all black shroud, nickel plated heatpipes, with a little hint of red at the centers of each fan.

This GPU would match particularly well with an ASUS Sabertooth board if you want that all black look, or if you don't want to go as hardcore with the red as ASUS' ROG branded products.

Lets hope this new GPU from Asus is a quiet as they claim and indeed remains as silent as a lamb at idle and medium loads. Hopefully doesn't roar like a lion in benchmark with the fans not following suit under load.

What do you guys think of this new design from ASUS? Please post your thoughts below.

Finally. The 0db feature is one of the most important selling points for PSUs, was about time a high end GPU adopted it. It also doesn't look like a bulky piece of trash like some of the other current ASUS cards (sorry, no love there), the stickers on the fans look ridiculous though. Well, you can peel them off.

Looks like a pair of owl eyes tbh. Would've been much better in all black.

0RPM fan feature needs to be adopted by everyone.

Stealthy looking, Silent, dual slot, 6GB VRAM... awesome!

Knowing me I'll forget during a dumb moment and think my fans aren't working and post here.

Pahahah We'll all be waiting for it now.

This looks really great. Is it meant to be a top of the line 780? I cant really tell, because its more minimalistic than usual.

Damn looks really nice. I like the PCB extension to make the SLI connectors easier to use. Big oversight on a few other cards...

Cool name too, makes sense to name it after an owl.

How are they going to move 250W of heat with fans that don't move enough air to be audible at all? Particularly with a dual slot cooler. That doesn't make sense to me.

Although if it's as good as Asus's marketing would make out (unlikely), I'd gladly swap my 780 DCU2 for one, since it's a little too loud (which is still pretty damn quiet) on idle at times for my liking.

You are reading it wrong mate, the fans are off when idle (therefore silent).

Under load the GPU's fans will operate normally, whether or not it will be audible under these conditions remains to be seen.

Not reading it wrong, just not reading all of it which is even worse. :p

Anyway now, I'm quite interested; It's a pity it wasn't released 5 months ago when I got the 780 I have.

Well that explains my comment earlier :p

Learn something new every day.

Edit; Someone needs to do a themed build in the windowed Prodigy (where you can only see the GPU front) with this card and put a graphic of the rest of the owl's 'face' on the side panel.

i expect you to do this now

I'm running a 0db PSU and I love it, putting the same principle into a GPU sounds wonderful - but the only way to stop the fans turning will be to move all that heat off the GPU heatsink, keep it away from the other components, and get it out of the case. The whole interior layout and the smooth passage of air is going to become very important. Either way, it's a 6GB GPU so I'll be looking at the price tag as much as the temperature readout.

Haha, yeah, didn't see that when I came through earlier.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strix_(genus) Here's Wikipedia on it.

Only reason I remembered that was because of some book about owls I read ages ago... Quite remarkable how I still remembered.
