good afternoon dudes. if finally set the wheels in motion to get the money together for an uber uber uber build but i want the thing to be an absolute beast so maybe one of you guys will be more in the know than me. x58 with the 1366 was the past generations holy crap setup. so is sandy bridge E with the 2011 z79 going to be the sucessor to x58 as the OH MY GOODNESS IM PLAYING CRYSIS TO IN RAY TRACING MODE or will that be the next ivy bridge that will come out a few months after. i will probably have the money together xmas or just after and i know that the non extreme sbE is a 6 core with 3.2ghz stock and 12 mb but i havent seen anything on reported specs on the ivy just thought maybe one of you guys would be able to provide some helpful insight/advice/w.e u wanna call it.

Lol, Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy will be faster than Bullcrap

Bulldozer is competing with Sandy Bridge not Sandy Bridge-E or Ivy.

If you got the dough the 3960x Sandybridge-E is gonna be the ducks guts as the first release uber chip, some sites are claiming a 47% increase in performance over the 990x if I have remembered the correct chip name LOL im quite sure it was the 3960

Tbf that 47% number would be like the maximum possible, most likely the average performance is a slightly lower figure than that improvement

For the OP, Ivy Bridge is mainstream, 20% faster or so than the current Sandy Bridge. Both on the LGA 1155 socket, though Ivy is the die shrink down to 22nm.

Sandy Bridge E is the enthusiast (32nm) class, about as fast as Intel are ever going to go on 32nm. Its X79 not Z79 though

I suppose "Ivy Bridge E" will be released too next year, but would be on a different chipset to X79.

The talk was that Ivy Bridge E was going to be X79 compatable, lets hope so anyway it would make life easy if it is

i read that ivy bridge will use the 1155 but will require a new mobo anyway so for the E series id say they wouldnt be compatible either if they were 2011 also

Ivy Bridge is 1155 no need for a different mobo as long as you already have a P67 or Z68 one.

You will need a GEN 3 mobo for PCI-E 3 unless Asus and the rest do what Gigabyte are doing and release a BIOS update that basically overclocks the PCI-E chip to run at PCI-E 3 frequencies. But apart from that Ivy Bridge will work fine in any 1155 mobo.

Don't know about Ivy Bridge E being compatible with 2011 but knowing Intel there probably will be another chipset.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat regarding my next build, SB-E or wait for the IB shrink. I doubt however I'll be able to wait for IB!

On a related note, the IB shrink is going to be a fairly dramatic shrink, 32nm to 22nm is rather a lot. Do we anticipate any yield problems or other issues with the chip its self for early adoptors? 32nm is proven with SB and SB-E just build on this.

Still, Cougar Point aside, SB has been quite the success story so far.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Rumours are that this is what the delays in both the blue and red camps are all about.

Latest I've read on all sides is this:

Ivy Bridge - April 2012

Sandy Bridge E - Jan 2012

Bulldozer - Sept. 19th?

As for GPUs, AMD 7xxx October/November, nVidia 6xx Jan 2012.

Don't take these as gospel, but they're what I'm working to.

Yeah, those dates match the "best guess" stuff I've been reading too. I'd like to see 7*** and 6*** int he fields for at least a few weeks before deciding. With these timings it might be a case of only when IB is out can I make an informed GPU choice. Then of course there's the question of when will water block be available for the new GPU's...

Patience, must practise patience...

SB-E will be released later this year. Definitely 2011, at least for initial offerings.

Ivy Bridge is in all likelihood 2012, its good for a Q4 release but there's absolutely no need.
