Samsung 840 Evo - have I made the right move?

Sup? Long time no speak, etc.

After almost three years of what can only have been the hardest of work, my MBP's poor Hitachi HDD has spun its last platter. All data lost, drive completely unresponsive, the lot.
In a rage fueled trip to Amazon I saw Samsung's relatively new 840 Evo drive and immediately bit the bullet.
From the looks of things it seems to be in between the standard 840 and the Pro, which is about what I expected. It's around £70 cheaper than the Pro, which is great, but i'm wondering if any of y'all have anything bad to say about it.

I've not kept up to date on tech stuff for the last few months, so i'm hoping all y'all have been.

Thanks,
Jos...er, John.

Only issue you have, is OSX doesn't enable Trim on any none-mac 3rd party SSD's. So over-time it may/will degrade until you re-wipe it.

Which OSX are you bunging on it?

Either Mountain Lion or Mavericks, most likely. Mavericks would be easier as I can just wait until my mother's laptop needs to update and nab the install files.
And hmm, that's interesting. Don't suppose there's any Terminal commands that can help re-enable TRIM?

Not so far as I'm aware, no fella, this is one of the massive set backs of third party SSD's at the moment. Although I'd look into it more if you fancy it because there may have been an update.

As for Mavericks, you might as well chuck mountain lion on for now, then upgrade via the store. It's only usually £15 ~ £20 per upgrade now (although with them changing the nomenclature it's very possible they'll decide to change the price).

It would seem as though it's not too hard to do, though perhaps Mavericks shall be different still.

My issue with Mountain Lion is actually getting the bugger. With Mavericks i'll just make a bootable .iso from the install package that App Store gives me - can't really do that with Mountain Lion as the only remaining Mac in the house already has it. Without getting into more nefarious options I'll probably wait until Mavericks; it shouldn't be too long of a wait :)

Oh cool, glad there's a fix :) I happily stand corrected and will no doubt go and fill my Mac Pro with SSD's now! I hadn't looked up a solution in far too long it seems. doh

The 840 evo is good paired with Samsung magician for the new Dataplex features, such as Rapid (auto RAM Caching) and TurboWrite, which uses a small buffer SLC NAND to write to before transferring it to the TLC NAND when it is idle. Not sure that software works with OSX though..

Hmm, I seem to be in the same position as you - you're just a few weeks late.
The drive's served me absolutely beautifully and it was no issue to get up and running.

I'm not sure about the link you posted already about TRIM, but I used a third party app which edits the Kernel to allow non-Apple SSDs to get support.

Apps are loading fast, bootup is far quicker, all seems well.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
