Rubbish Quality with Asus DX and Image One Cans

So I managed to pick up the Klipsch Image Ones on the cheap (not off eBay but Amazon Warehouse) and I couldn't wait to try them through my Asus DX sound card.

The sound quality was anything but good. It was terrible! None of the EQ settings I changed about made much difference - and this was being plugged directly into the card. Whereas when I plugged the cans into the front panel, it worked fine. What's the problem with my card/cans? Do I need to purchase an amp to drip the headphones through the back?

just an idea, if your not using them, try to use the xonar unified drivers. Sorted all bugs i had on all my asus sound cards

Yea try updating your drivers. I'm on on-board audio atm and even with an amp feeding my DT770's the difference is massive, without a card. I would recommend an amp at some point Dani. Take a look at FiiO if you want something cheap.
 
Okay tried what you both suggested and no joy. Although I tested a theory (using the aeroplane splitter and noticed that (even though it was on one side of the phones) that because of the built in mic I wouldn't get the full sound through the DX and out of the headphones. Guess I'll just have to use it on the front panel for now.

Maybe KOS will see this thread and give me some pointers (as I know he has these headphones and soundcard) thanks though guys

It's just one 3.5mm jack for both mic and headphones.

Not that I can recall... The mic is on a very small block on the headphone wire (with 3 buttons on it). It's very weird, but it seems to output a weirdly sounding mono version of the songs I play.
 
I was thinking along the lines that your speakers may be something like 5.1 or 7.1 and yet when the headphones go in, instead of reverting to 2, it stays the same and you only get partial output. Like listening to only 1 of your speakers.

Sounds like drivers to me tbh. How/what/why I don't know.

Seems the same for me as well, I'm not to bothered using the front panel, the audio is still hooked up to the sound card anyway.

Can you describe what the lack in quality was? distortion,extra noise etc. I'm guessing since it is a single connector with a mic it could be it. Try going to sound under the control panel go to recording select MIC then under MIC go to levels there should be two things microhpone and microphone boost. Microphone boost should be at +0.00dB or it generally creates a static from outside noise and for microphone that is how loud it picks up your voice I have mine set to 100 since I use Astro A*'s mic for talking while on mumble and it sits at my neck while having ATH m50's for listening since this is designed for iPhone I'm assuming that is where it is sitting? other than that I'm not too sure.

By any chance did the Klipsch come with a connector that has one jack split into a two. One of the two would be green and the other pink (audio+mic) try using that since the iPhone is picks up the mic using a TRRS plug rather than a pc using a TRS plug since it has separate connectors for each.

ill try to describe it as best as I can. So when I plug the headphones directly into the sound card the sound quality worsens, mainly the main vocals become a lot quieter and the main musical track become distorted when a little increase in volume. I can barely hear the vocals as well. I haven't used the mic (on my PC anyway) and I couldn't hear anything if I rubbed my thumb against it whilst wearing them, but I shall try your suggestion anyway.

nope the headphones only come with a single 3.5mm stereo jack. Do you think I need one of these? I was looking for one where I work but I couldn't picture it. This may be a fix thank you

What sampling rate have you got it set at? I've seen a similar problem with a Xonar when it was set at 192KHz, but putting it back to 96KHz solved it.
 
Tried it on each sample rate, was initially 192KHz but I dropped it down as well. Still the same!

Ah well. as I said, not to bothered now (passed the moment of caring

) I will be jogging for about 30 mins and will have forgotten I even had an issue.

So I ordered the cable recommended by Lys0l and it worked a treat! Can't thank you enough mate.

So thank you!! Definitely had to do with the built in mic and it only working well with Apple products. Ah well, Pretty pleased now so thanks again!
 
Reading this became a boring. BUT I use a Xonar DX with Klipsch Image Ones as well and they sound excellent. I am just saying this to assure you that this is not a bad combination of headphones and sound card.

Sorry it was a bore... It wasn't intentional. Just wanted to know how you set up your cans with the card to make it sound good and not distorted.
