Routers better than others?

I've always had some problems where my router seems to be holding me back, where the internet just won't load. 2 connect to it wireless and my pc wired. Are there routers that can better handle computers than others or are they all the same? Like i believe when they all access the internet at the same time it runs slower, is this true? I have a Linksys WRT54G

Linksys blows big time imo. Ham - another member here has had quite an amount of trouble with his. I'd look at Belkin, Buffalo or D-Link personally

WRT54G is one of the best routers you can get

Old Linksys routers owned tbh :) mainly because of OpenWRT etc (made it more like a cisco router). But there are loads of other companies routers that can use OpenWRT.

WRT54G is one of the best routers you can get once you put on some custom firmware!!!! :D

CPU: Broadcom BCM4712 200 MHz

RAM: PC-133 32MB (2x16MB)

FLASH: 16MB

I have a WRT54GS and am currently using DD-WRT on it and the features are amazing. Aswell as support for SSH & Other apps like IRC Bouncers etc :) too many features to list really. Main apsect being the firewall tho :)

Draytek are amazing routers aswell.

What do you mean?

If 3 computers are downloading/accessing the ADSL or whatever will run slower due to the load.

Or do you mean the LAN speeds etc?

If it's LAN speeds etc, it's probably more likely the wireless.

My speedtouch 580 is crap atm. Could be on the way out...randomly decides if its gonna keep a port open or not even tho ive specified it to. Say utorrent is working flawlessly, it will then randomly show the ports as blocked and vice versa. Does it with other progs too, even with firewall off! ARGH, hate the slow firmware too and the wireless hardly lets my psp in due to a dns error  but then sometimes it does work lol

Most routers dont have enuff processing power and ram use an old pc with a linux distro called smoothwall ... bloody good router and great firewall

As PV said, i had a fair bit of trouble with my WAG54GS (i think it is). It took a firemware upgrade, moving the router to a different part of the house and a LOT of playing with different settings. Its now running fairly happily though, i still get the odd gateway dropout, but it connects again in no time.

tbh i think you need to play like mad with the settings, linksys give you a lot of options.

I think most of the new linksys stuff is a bit rubbish :(

My ADSL router is also based on a broadcom chipset tho (similar to the WRT54GS) the same as the Netgear DG834G :) and I've not had any problems, altho it is setup in DMZ so the WRT54GS does all the work. QoS etc is pretty amazing :)

I was using a PC with my own IPTables firewall+Transparent Proxy etc running on gentoo, but now I just use the WRT54GS with a IPTables script made on FWBuilder :). It's a lot smaller than the PC I was using before and has WIFI. The only downside is the disk space as I used to download stuff and use a webcaching proxy on the PC Firewall.

So can any1 recommend me a router based on my problems? I torrent and game a lot and would like a router that has something like downloadable profiles for easy port setup but without the cackups of my current speedtouch - wireless plz ;)

The two 3COM routers I have had experiences with have had a poor range of config options and dreadful wireless.

Might just have been the models though.

And then on the other hand, my Linksys router has been outstanding. Only had to reboot it once in just over 3 years of being permanently on.

My speedtouch seems to be deciding when ports are going to be left open or not  which is rather annoying. Just hate having to insert all the ports when it doesnt actually keep them open

You can get the DG834G's on ebay for £20-£30 I think :) depends on how much you want to spend I guess.

Ewww not netgear!?! :(

3-COM FTW!

definatly 3com.

i sell 3com at my office, you cannot beat them for price vs functionality.

would be nice if they did a mimo version, but doesn't look like we will be getting that ne time soon from them.

i generally use the 3com, coupled with a nice orinoco card (or intel cards) and wack on a hawking 8dbi antennae.............

PUKKA reception.
