RAID 5 Migration

I shall shortly be purchasing another 1tb disk, to bring my total up to 3 and therefore I want to RAID 5. However, I want to know if it is possible to clone the original disk with all of my OS and files on, to another disk in the interim, and then put them back on the new 2TB RAID array without the need to reinstall everything.

I would also like to know if there is a way of doing this for free.

Raid5

Hi :)

From wot I have read it seems that this is possible as long as the software you use to clone the drive/drives supports the RAID card you are going to use.

This is not something I have personally tried but Jim was good enough to answer the question I asked about migrating a RAID array to a single SSD.

Take a look at the thread as you my find ita useful read :)

I can not see any reason this would be much different going to RAID, but you will need to store the image file somewhere other than on 1 of the drives that is going to be part of the RAID aray.

Good luck :)

Might be worth checking theres no limitations on it thou before u migrate, dont wanna format yer disks to find that the trial version only supports images of up to 5gb!!! or something similar!!

Cheers for the thought +reps...looks like it comes with the full version though :) I'll keep clonezilla on hand just in case

Quick follow up to this. For people transfering from one disk to another, I cannot recommend this enough, it is fast, easy and free for 30 days and can run without windows. For people putting the OS onto a RAID setup, you might as well hit your head against the wall...windows is convinced of corruption and blue screens...so its a new install jobbie.

Bummer :(

Thats a bummer, was hoping it would work for you as I was going to do a similar task this weekend.

Think I'll just play it safe and do a clean install!!
