Hi. i just noticed that my gpu is only running at x8 when i thought it should be at x16 ?

it is located in the top pci-e slot.

any ideas why that would be ?
the other thing i noticed is when making changes in the bios or resetting the clear cmos, is when it boots up it tells me to press F1 and enter the bios. to change the setting from ahci to raid or raid0. i've owned the m/b for over a year and never seen that before. i was thinking it might be something to do with the (dedicated)m.2 express lane and the pci-e x16 maybe. any clues. thanks

i did change the setting in the bios to raid0 as i wanted to check it out and promptly lost my pci-e x1 creative soundcard.

the info about being instructed to switch to raid0 is shown on a page right before windows loads but it is not always there. only when i do a clear cmos or update the bios version.
i see. the pci-e x16 only running @ x8. it is shown in cpuz and aida64. i'm not sure i can insert an image but here is what aida64 has given

"Bus Type PCI Express 3.0 x8 @ 1.1 x8"

and cpuz in mainboard says "link width x8; max. supported x8.

i'm sure it says in the bios too. i'll just check. yes it says so in the bios, tools section.

I run a MSI X99 SLi Plus and if I put my Titan XP in the top slot I only get X8. Moving it to the middle one resolved the issue, if it was an issue. It was a brand new board.

What CPU are you using? I doubt that you are using an APU with the Crosshair, but the APUs are limited to 8x PCIe.

i will give that a try later. good idea thanks

nope. still running at x8. sorry.
i flashed the bios just yesterday, but the problem was there before that.

could it not be something to do with the M.2 being pci-e ? there were 2 errors. the gpu running at x8 and the message to change bios and go to raid0.

i guess other than that i might need to do a windows install.

Can you take our your RX 460 and look at it?

Some of Sapphire's RX 460 GPUs are electrically 8X. Even so, an 8x connection isn't a major issue for an entry-level graphics card.

i'll have a look at it when i get the chance. if i need to.
i'll see what info i can find on it and update. thanks for your help.

i think you are correct. i used gpu-z and the bus interface is pci-e x8 3.0@x8 1.1
i read that in a review too so it is probably correct. cheers.

just out of curiosity, why do say "electrically" ? i noticed that the past week, when pci-e x8 is listed in the spec's

By electrically, I mean how the device is wired. Whether or not the device is actually connecting to physical PCIe lanes on a motherboard or graphics card.

Some 16x PCIe slots on motherboards can only have eight or four lanes that are physically wired to it, rather than the full sixteen. The same thing can happen on the GPU side, where a card is designed to fit into a 16x PCIe slot, but is wired to only support up to eight PCIe lanes.

Below I have included an example of a Sapphire RX 460 with a full PCIe x16 bus.

Below is another Sapphire RX 460 that is wired to only offer eight PCIe lanes using the same PCIe x16 form factor/connection. Notice the difference?

it looks like half the contacts are missing from the bus interface on the lower pic.

i am pretty certain i have a full set of contacts on my card. i'll check tomorrow.
