Radeon 4890 problem

OK so i think my XFX Radeon 4890 may be on the way out but i'm not sure, it keeps on crashing forcing me to restart the computer as if it is overheating :L

What i don't understand is that i can be playing BF3 solid for 5+ Hours without a problem, but occasionally i'll start a game and within 5 minutes the graphics card will crash, giving me a black or white screen. The card is still within warranty and i could send it back to xfx. Also i know it's time for an upgrade but i haven't got a lot of money at the moment and i have zero income as i have no job (stuck in school :L).

Just wanted your thoughts on what the problem might be, cheers

how long do you have the card? being honest with you im not impressed with the paste that xfx is using or at lest they were using, mine dried out in less than a year, good question aswell would be whether it actually overheats or not? also if you oc that.

i've repasted my gpu recently and it lowered my temps by 50C xDD

Well the card has not been OC'd, didn't see any point as I accidently bough the zalman cooler version

I will look into replacing the thermal paste as soon as I have heard back from XFX about this cards warranty and whether it is still under warranty or not. If it is I will send it back and get a 5450 to put into my computer in the mean time.

Thanks for your reply by the way, I do really appreciate it

I have Sapphire 4890 Toxic and I started having the same issues this week. It's getting worse day by day...

Tried clean windows install, tried different drivers. Card never passes 65ºC (GPU nor RAM).

No solution. I guess it's just dying. New tactic for us to buy new cards sooner?
