r9 290 black boot on asus z97i plus

Hey all, I'm having this irritating problem with my new build with the z97i plus from asus.

It's hooked to my plasma tv, when i'm using the built in gfx from the i5 cpu there's no problem.
However when I install a r9 290 gpu ( I tried both a reference asus model and the sapphire 290 tri-x oc model) the screen recognizes the input, it switches to 1080p on the tv but the screen stays black with both gpu's , even when it's booting :/
Both amd cards work on my other msi z97 gaming 3 mobo without a problem...

I have tried a 8800gtx gpu in the same slot on the mobo and then there is no problem...

I flashed the latest bios drivers
Don't have a clue what to do next so... :/

It's a corsair 1000 watt psu
asus z97i plus mobo
i5 4690k
8gb ram

Do you have the video cables plugged in the GPU? Sounds like your just keeping it in the mobos display connectors?

Always plugged it into the gpu after gpu install

I have done it this way. I plug everything in and the HDMI(or whatever) into the GPU. Install the Drivers/CCC suite and it will recognize the installed GPU and go to full HD. You can use the CCC suite to configure things to your liking. But even without the AMD drivers Windows will still install its own generic ones and you can still see everything on screen.

You shouldn't have had to unplug anything.

Do you have any other PC to test the card in? Just to make sure that it's not a hardware error.

I can't install the drivers when there is only a black screen, can't even see bios so... , and you can't install the ati drivers without the card installed it appears :/

I have tested the card on another pc, and it works fine


I also set pci first in bios, I tried a radeon hd 4*** in it and it works too... installed the ccc drivers and then tried the 2 different 290's again and nothing, just black screen?
is it possible that the 290 isn't supported by the mobo :/

Just checked supported devices list... the 290 isn't in there :/ bleh great

I have never heard of a mobo not supporting a dedicated GPU. Especially since that mobo was released after they came out.


You sure the Bios is up to date? Do you have the IGPU enabled in the bios?

Some 290s have problems with their output I/O
A friends 290x has a broblem that the DVIs have no output

bios is up to date, yes enabled in bios.

And the card does work on another mobo so i don't think it's the card that faulty, and two other cards work on that mobo so dunno.

Could it be the psu is faulty and not getting enough power to the 290? however a gtx8800 and hd 4850 both work fine on it

Pretty sure you need to disable the Igpu in the bios.

The was (still is?) a problem with some 290/290X cards. Random black screens or black screens at boot up etc.
It was even addressed it the AMD driver releases:

But it would be weird if your cards work in other machines, so does not sound like the problem others had (at least not exactly the same problem).

Have you plugged in another Screen (Different output, not HDMI)
Have you disabled the onboard gpu (if present)
Is the slot clean (perhaps try a different one first) and are all cables (power...) connected and working?

Only thing left would be to check which memory brand is used. If you see Eldia in there ... there is quite a lot of ranting about the black screen issue (mostly while gaming, but nonetheless...) and most of the affected are using cards with this memory while hynix seems to have nearly no problems at all.

One of my r9 290 cards has hynix memory and it gives the same black screen as the one with eldipa mem.

By using a radeon hd 4850 gfx card installed (hey gotta try anything right)
And yeah it's probably the mobo/bios, still weird that it isn't supported tho :/

Pretty sure swapping out the cards won't work as well for the same driver. Need to reinstall it. Follow AMDs removal/install guide and download the latest 14.4 driver.

Well, you can't install it without the card in place, and can't install drivers when I can't see anything so.

Anyway, I just contacted asus in the hope they have an answer or a solution or it's gonna sell the 290 and get another card

I know that. You need to remove the drivers completely with the video output from the IGPU. Once its all gone you will need to install the 290 and connect your video cable to it and then install the 14.4 drivers for it.
