Quieter Fans By Using 7V Trick

That is one awesome post. Great idea. My Antec 900 was using one 4pin molex fan from my old tsunami dream and that was the loudest fan i had inside.

After the mod its silent once again!

I might have to attack my little brothers Viper case. Damn all those 80mm fans are noisy!!!

Cheers! :D

Ever thought about just sticking a switch in for the ground line so you can change between 0V and 5V. Get silence when ur not under heavy load, then switch it up when you need some extra cooling!

Its been done many times, and works well. But its pretty messy. Extra wires ftl.

Sounds even better! Just have to see if it any more hassle really

How do i overvolt fans?

i would like to overvolt 3 xilence red wings for my rad.

Cant find the overvolting guide.

Cheers, but im a bit of a noob,

:)

i would like to try the 24v one

:)

Anyone got any pictures?

:)

Cheers.

So what if my fan only has one the one red wire and one black wire right next to each other? The fan I'm talking about is the 230mm one on the window of the Armor+ MX case. Its just a red and black wire going into a 4 pin molex connector (one thats actually male / female, wires go in right between the two...weird I know). Also would doing this affect the LED lights on the fan?

I tried this mod a few days ago with a couple of cheap ebuyer fans. It works well - the fans were silent but my case was still hot (it's probably cos I've got a XP 2100+ Palomino which runs close to 55 degrees when idle).

Anyway the instructions say to plug into a HD or CD-ROM so it can absorbe the extra voltage - well here's a little tip: When it is plugged into a hard drive (in my case). Make sure all the power is turned off whenever you are fiddling with the machine. I unplugged one of my fans (left the molex connector in the hdd but took the clip off the fan) and when I was putting the case side back on it touched the connector and shorted the circut and fried my hard drive

I don't know what to laugh at first, the fact that you were messing about with live modded power connectors or the fact that you posted it on here LOL !!!!!!!

Niavlys77, if you could make a pic it'd really help. My guess is the following: quick AutoCAD sketch (.pdf)http://monkey.fayntic.com/Molex-Model.pdf

Solid lines indicate the current situation, you'd need to move the red wire to connect with the yellow one.

EDIT: just remembered this would reduce the voltage to 5v :/

Hey nvm, I actually was just screwing around with a bunch of molex to molex connectors I found last night and did the rewiring with them. Didn't have to screw around with the actual fan wires :D and I got it to work. Thanks for the help monkey7 and thanks for this guide Davos, definitely helpful. :worship:
