Quick Question....

Hi,

I have a Asus p8p67 Pro mobo currently running a GTX560Ti

I've just purchased 2x GTX580s for use in SLI

I know that the top PCI-E slot runs at x16 but when I run SLI it'll drop to x8. So both my GTX580s will run at x8.

If I use my old 560Ti in the bottom slot (x4 I think) for more folding@home PPD and as a PhysX card will that cause the 580s to run slower then x8?

Any ideas?

Thanks

You'll have to get confimation on this, but I'm almost sure that the tests done on using an additional card alongside 2x sli'd in the class of something like the 580, the fps actually went down in comparison with just letting the 2x cards get on with the physx.

(I *think* 2x 480 cards with an additional 460 were in the test.)

For folding tho - fantastic.

Again you'll have to get it first hand from someone who's actually done it, but I'm of the opinion you'll still have 2x x8 and 1x x4.

2 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (single at x16 or dual at x8/x8 mode)

1 x PCIe 2.0 x16* [Black] (max. at x4 mode, compatible with PCIe x1 and x4 devices)

dont think it'll work in that slot if I read that right its only compatible with x4 and x1 devices

also worth noting

*The PCIe x16_3 slot shares bandwidth with PCIe x1_1 slot, PCIe x1_2 slot, USB3_34 and ESATA12. The PCIe x16_3 runs at x1 mode by default for system resource optimization.(PCIe x1_2 will be disabled.)

I kinda thought that communicating the PhysX with a 3rd card may slow things down alittle, But for Folding@home what do you think would achieve the highest points per day. The 2x 580s on there own or 2x 580s and 1x 560Ti?

If slot 3 shares with slot 1... and slot 1 is running at half its speed (x8 instead of x16) surely it still has enough bandwidth left for a x4 card? Sorry i'm really confused...

The full spec of my build is:

Asus P8P67 Pro

Intel 2500k @ 4.8GHz

8GB 2133Mhz Memory

2x vertex 2 SSD (RAID 0)

I've also just bought 3x 1080p 3D monitors. Will the gtx580s be enough to run 3 displays in 3D with good FPS?

Thanks for everyone's help :-)

it can be daunting trying to read between thier lines lol basically that info I posted says that the pci-e3 x16 slot is only compatible with x1 and x4 devices so I dont think a pxi-e16 devide will work in that slot. If it does then it'll only be at x1 or x4 it states its x1 by default and it shares bandwith with pcie-x1 slots 1 and 2 so if you have anything in one of those slots it most def will be x1 it also shares bandwidth with the usb 3.0 ports 3 and 4 as well as esata port 1 and 2 so by using it you will most likely not have those available to use. My suggestion is dont use the 560TI

instead send it to me so it wont go to waste I am sure I can put it to good use for ya

hmm... that's a shame.

I'm sure i'll find a use for it. (you have a sexy 570HD anyway lol)

When PCI-E 3.0 comes out, that should provide enough bandwidth to use all 3 cards, right?

I've got work tomorrow so i'll have to wait till I finish to get everything set up. Actually now that I think about it I am feeling a little ill... Cough! :-)

pci-e 3.0 increase the current bandwidth on the lane not overall spread of it. Thats done by cpu and chipset

yeah I know the cough couch cough feeling

I have another rig as well for that 560Ti

plus I could answer ur question better if adding a different card for physics helps or not couldnt answer for sli but could for single plus physics hahahaha

I should edit my sig lol the top 3 items I no longer own as of saturday . I'm going SB the parts should be here thursday
