Quick News

This might sound odd, but maybe they don't want to. Like, maybe they feel they'd rather put their time and energy into new games rather than re-release old ones, even if there's money to be made?

That's fine, then why release the hounds on the team who were going to do it?

Sadly I am not a fan of Skyrim. I bought it, and completed it, but that was as far as it went. I hardly touched the sides tbh, about 24 hours. But it just isn't my thing, at all. I'm not into all of this medieval stuff tbh. And spells and potions etc? ghey. Give me apocalyptic mess every time.

FO3 remains the best game ever made for me. Closely followed by Mario 64. I would love a remake, simply because the story and gameplay are literally the best, ever. However, it's looking perittty long in the tooth graphically now. Which is a real shame, because I would love to wander the wastes and do some scavving on a prettier game.

Yeah, I can understand that. Still, there are legalities that go beyond the desires of even the company themselves. Maybe Bethesda actually wanted to see this small team remaster FO3, but couldn't allow it, for various different reasons that aren't as evil as we would expect.

I would absolutely love to see FO3 remastered. I would definitely buy it. But I'd rather see a new IP.

A reply to Nvidia possibly launching come July:

There has been a lot of excitement this week over a report by Tom’s Hardware suggesting the Nvidia GTX 1180 cards would be released in July this year. Which does seem mighty optimistic. But a counter report from Chinese site, Expreview, has suggested that’s only likely if Nvidia are going to exclude their partners and sell the graphics cards exclusively themselves.

Expreview’s Meng Xianrui has spoken to other industry sources who contradicted the statements from Tom’s Hardware, indicating that Nvidia hadn’t sent any new card notifications to vendors and normally that would happen at least two months ahead of any release.

If they haven’t sent out new card notifications to these AIBs yet then that either means the July launch date is a work of fiction, or that Nvidia are going to exclusively sell the cards through their own store.

Expreview also make the point that right now GTX 10-series stock is at a relatively high level, and certainly not at the sort of clearance stock level that you would associate with the last weeks of a graphics card generation’s lifespan.

They also question the previous ‘leaks’ which suggest the GTX 1180 could come with as much as 16GB of GDDR6 memory. That’s something which has baffled Jacob and I in the PCGN office too - current generation memory pricing has risen by 15% in the first quarter of 2018 and, while GDDR6 is not going to be as expensive or difficult to produce as HBM2, it’s a brand new memory technology and SK Hynix and Samsung aren’t going to just be giving it away.

Why would Nvidia want to crush their margins by putting 16GB of memory onto a gaming card that’s not really going to need that much for a long while? A GTX 1180 Ti maybe, but not a GTX 1180 or 1170.

For us, we're still quite doubtful of a big GPU launch in July, exclusive or otherwise. The last we heard was that Nvidia was gearing up for an unexpectedly big Gamescom. So there could be some movement towards the end of August, which would line up more with previous rumours and expectations of a September launch.

16GB of GDDR6 was always a stupid rumour. 8GB is fine.

If Nvidia does release their graphics cards only through their site, they really did care about separating themselves from others and the GPP program was indeed their first attempt at doing that.

Nah no chance in hell their partners will stand for that. They would lose a tremendous amount of money over it.

I think they'll launch with 12GB or maybe indeed with 8.

There comes a time when increasing the VRAM no longer makes sense for gaming cards for the foreseeable future, and I believe that time is upon us.

Yep, I agree. 16GB of system RAM is enough for gaming and will be for many years, while 8GB of VRAM will be enough for at least another generation.

Nope. Nvidia would make more money for it. There partners would be screwed. There partners are so entrenched and at the mercy of Nvidia it's really a horrible business model. There are just a middle man.

Nvidia could easily make a non FE card and be fine. Especially since power consumption will drop they don't need a mega cooler.

Nvidia have the power, ability, and anti competitive behavior to do such a thing. There CEO is ruthless but as a business man, he is VERY smart.

At the launch of the 1080ti, Nvidia themselves said that 11gigs were enough for 5k gaming, so more than that wouldn't make sense, as 4k is still not that common.
Only problem is the chip size, if they only come in 8gb, then 16gb is the only way to go.
So maybe a xx70 with 8gb, and xx80 and xx80ti with 16gb

Today 8GB is more than enough for pretty much any game. I all likelihood the so-called 1180 will use a 256-bit memory bus, making 8GB and 16GB options. They would either need to cut down to a 192-bit bus or increase for a 384-bit bus size for 12GB.

If Nvidia uses their regular release model, with an XX80 series card then an XX80 Ti model 8-12 months later, they will need more memory bandwidth and therefore a larger memory bus (or faster memory).

8GB seems perfect for a GTX 1180 model, as most games don't use anywhere near 8GB at 4K. 16GB is stupid, as plenty of PC gamers don't even have that much DRAM. With GDDR6 offering more bandwidth I don't see Nvidia changing their memory bus sizes too much this generation.

As far as 16GB goes, Nvidia will likely use that size of memory bus for a Quadro version of the GTX 1180, that seems logical, but for a gaming card Nvidia are just wasting their customer's money for the sake of pushing higher VRAM standards in gaming.

Ex-Intel Security Expert: New Spectre Attack Can Even Reveal Firmware Secrets

Yuriy Bulygin, who once headed Intel's advanced threat team, has discovered that Spectre variant 1 can be modified with kernel privileges to break into the System Management Mode (SMM) of x86 systems. These attacks would "allow an unprivileged attacker to read the contents of memory, including memory that should be protected by the range registers, such as SMM memory."

IBM Warns of Instant Breaking of Encryption by Quantum Computers

The head of IBM Research thinks that security-minded individuals should start looking into alternate forms of encryption and move their data today, as quantum computing is on the horizon. Some believe that quantum computers, capable of instantly breaking today's strongest security, could debut in as little as five years.

Quantum computers can solve some types of problems near-instantaneously compared with billions of years of processing using conventional computers. Moler said people might feel safe because they have done everything they are supposed to do to secure their existing data -- but quantum computing will break it. "I do think that's scary," she said.

Stats Show How Rarely Game Campaigns Are Played

While Treyarch is getting flak for developing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as a multiplayer-only title, statistics show that the decision could be justifiable. According to numbers gathered by TrueAchievements, few players are invested in the series’ single-player story modes.

The participation for the original Black Ops averaged 25.44% with the second game peaking at 27.13%. The third game averaged a paltry 4.14%, though to be fair this game's achievements are a bit different and require you play on higher than regular difficulty to unlock most of them. Still, the story completion achievement, which pops regardless of difficulty, sits at under 9%.

Pers. comm.: this is what I fear, FPS becoming multi-player only, it's already happening. Truly a sad day in my book.

Facebook Android App Caught Seeking "Superuser" Clearance

There was an internal screw-up at Facebook this week that resulted in their Android app requesting "superuser" permissions, which, as described by the OS, grants "full access to your device." While the issue has been fixed, it was bad timing for the social media giant, in light of recent data scandals.

"A coding error in one of our anti-fraud systems caused a small number of people running the Facebook app and certain permission management apps on rooted Android phones to see a request for additional access permissions. We do not need or want these permissions, and we have already fixed this issue. We apologize for any confusion," Facebook commented.

Uh huh...
