Micron turn their back on Intel's NAND flash memory tech as the love affair ends

Micron and Intel are officially splitting up, dumping their joint NAND flash manufacturing activities, and fighting over custody of the the family dog, Moore. The first thing Micron has done with its new-found freedom is ditch the floating-gate technology the two companies have been boasting about for years, and instead adopt the industry-standard, charge-trap approach. Stay with us, it gets interesting.

Micron is the attractive divorcee for investors and market pundits right now, with its stock sharply rising to new highs over the last month. The company has also confirmed plans to repurchase $10 billion worth of its shares. This all follows an end to Micron’s partnership with Intel back in January, a partnership which led to the Intel-Micron Flash Technologies joint venture.

Interesting, coincides nicely with planned capacity expansions.

TBH if there is one thing that I want to change in the PC market right now it is DRAM pricing. It has become a huge barrier that is getting in the way of a lot of planned hardware upgrades or new builds.

Yep. I can get a 500GB+ SSD for cheaper than 16GB of memory.

Hell you can get a case, cpu, motherboard all for the price of 16GB of memory. That's just pathetic!

Yup! I'm glad I got my memory when I did last October. Still overpriced but soon after there was even less available than when I purchased it and prices had risen again. Not the greatest specifications on the kit but I don't care about a few microseconds. In the end I think we will have to get used to these prices; all this talk off lowering prices because this or that reason are nonsense. They are raking in golden geese on a daily basis and nothing will change their ways.

Interesting, the split was announced a while ago, but now we have a technical reason for it.

Intel Press release from January.

Interesting to know that Micron is moving to what the rest of the industry is using, though it is strange to think that Intel wants to continue to work on the same technology.

Nice find.

Yeah it's a tad nuts, Looking at my Amazon account I paid exactly £128 as it was on special offer for 2x8GB 3600MHZ Corsair RGB, Now it's £229.99, That's mental.

Epyc Fail? Researchers Say They Can Defeat AMD’s Virtual Machine Encryption

AMD's Epyc server chips utilize Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) to automatically encrypt virtual machines on the fly while stored in memory, but researchers say that they can get around it with a technique dubbed SEVer: "miscreants at the host level can alter a guest's physical memory mappings, using standard page tables, so that the SEV mechanism fails to properly isolate and scramble parts of the VM in RAM."

This is not the first time eggheads have uncovered shortcomings in SEV's ability to lock down VMs: previous studies have examined how the memory management system can be exploited by hackers to poke inside encrypted guests. Fraunhofer AISEC's study, emitted on Thursday this week, takes this a step further, demonstrating that, indeed, the entire memory contents of a virtual machine could be pulled by a hypervisor even when SEV is active.

Well it's not that impressive honestly. There are many things that can defeat any encryption. Sure it can be an insane encryption like 1024bit or whatever, but just grab a quantum computer and about 5 seconds later any encryption in the world is cracked.

What kind of sick twisted poor excuse of a developer would produce a School Shooter FPS...

But walking into a airport filled with innocents and mowing them down (COD) is OK?

It's not that I don't agree with you, but games are ultra violent already. Just because they match up a subject matter doesn't make it any different IMO.

We sailed that boat a very long time ago (90s) now we just have to live with the consequences really.

There is a difference in my opinion. That game appears to trivialise highly specific, highly sensitive atrocities. The infamous COD sequence still shocks me to this day and makes me uneasy, but it at least was not done to provoke sadism and was not the main purpose of the game. Shootings at airports have been in entertainment for years. Die Hard 2, 12 Monkeys, Max Payne 3, The Expendables, they all have violent acts performed at airports, but it's not specific. The developers of the school shooting game are trying to make money on the memories and experiences of specific horrific events. COD was being more vague and thus less instructive and less senseless.

I am sure that if you showed all of that stuff to the victims of the Pan Am bombing over Lockerbie they would not be happy. What's the difference between one act of terrorism and another? That is the reason why we have those movies (not the game, that's different) because we spent most of the 70s and 80s terrified about bombs on planes and terrorist attacks at airports (and hijacking etc). Which were all very real and actually happened..

I know quite a lot about self control because I have practically none. I have no filter, and I generally tend to swear like a sailor. And you know what? about a month ago when I changed meds I told myself it was time to stop swearing. It was an atrocious habit I had picked up living in a very rough part of the world but the fact is I am not there any more. So what happened? well I went on YT to watch some videos of people riding BMX and it was swear heaven. Literally, going at it like sailors. I then decide to watch other tech videos and they are all doing it too.

Why? because at some point some liberal hippy douche thought it was OK to do that. We changed TV forever back in the early noughties by introducing the 9pm thing. And the more you remove things like that the worse they get.

Now yes, this is an appalling subject matter from which to make a game but where do you stop? If it's OK to sensationalise other types of murder and violence and etc where do you stop?

See, Mr Aging Liberal Hippy Douche wants every one to be able to play whatever games they want and etc, yet, not expect there to be any consequence because apparently society is in control of itself and won't act out in violence. Yet as we have clearly seen since the dawn of horror movies and etc? that is not the case. There will be instances where it will make a bad situation worse.

Everything in our world is falling apart. We've gone too far and now we are paying the price.

The real issue is the idiotic USA gun laws that allow for these repeatedly. We don't have school shootings...guess why... If that moron president avoids gun laws discusssions why should devs avoid their result?

I agree with AlienALX: the airport example is spot on. So is beating down hookers with hammers (GTA5) etc.

It's not a game I would play, though.

Star Citizen

A new Star Citizen pack called Legatus cost $27,000 that gives you nearly every ship in the game. It only cost $1,000 to even get access to view the page, and by that you need to have already spent $1,000 on the game to view the page.

Bunch of bull crap if you ask me. If I was spending that much money on it I better damn well get EVERYTHING in the game for life

If I ever spend a fraction of that I need to be hospitalised - for life. I've said it before and I'll say it again: star citizen, best scam ever!

To be fair the gun laws that people keep saying to change namely assault rifle types count for a small % of shootings in the USA, most are from illegal pistols and no law change will stop that

I'll be polite here but really you shouldn't have any right to bag on US gun laws when you probably know next to nothing about them except what the media tells you.

Just in the past week we have had a handful of active shooters shoot up restaurants and whatnot just for a good guy/girl with a gun stop him and prevent any deaths.

You won't here the media talk about it. Want to know how many lives were saved? More than 50 easily.

Yep it is ridiculous. Apparantely on the forum if you contact there Customer Support they will let you buy it without spending the $1000. Wow what a deal!
