Question regarding RAID HDDs

Putting aside my thoughts about having such a high storage space on a raid0 (I`m a raid coward atm).

I don`t know how much ur willing to spend or how well they may perform, but I noticed the other day that Seagate had 7200/32m/500GB SATA hard drives in stores this week. I`d love to have gotten hold of them to speed test. Fresh in @ $124, which I thought was pretty good.

Haha yeah hence my holding the data on many separate PCs just in case so if I lose my master RAID I can rebuild from the other PCs :D

The trouble is I only have a restricted number of HDD spaces in my PC (despite using the Kandalf LCS) I've pretty much filled every spare space. I know I could use larger HDDs and use RAID10 or something but I just don't have the money to do that and it would mean finding something else to do with my other 600GB RAID :p If anyone does have a viable solution I am willing to consider it but it needs to be relatively low budget and at least 1TB storage. If it is to replace my existing RAID it needs to be at least 2TB.

Do they sell to the UK or in the UK?

Think a UK shop may have them in for ~70/80 pound or something, check the usual suspects.

That`s a performance thing tho (32mb), if it`s pure long term storage, speed may not be an issue. So cheap as cheap can be.

As for sound/noise, in alot of cases (not pc cases if u catch my drift), it`s due to vibration more than the drives making noises. Head seeking clicks and so forth are naturale, dampners `n` stuff about screw fixings can be good.

Personally I find fans louder.

Wow - storage is so cheap nowadays! Seagate is usually pretty quiet, and their 5 year warranty is a definate plus. 500GB in raid0 is going to be fast, just from the super high density of the disks!

i can't recommend the Samsung Spinpoint series enough, they are as silent as seagate but faster :) i have all my drives from them and they're awesome :D
