Tiles does just go onto the single screen.
You can click in the corner of each where the start button should be, and that changes which screens the tiles appear on.
Tbh though, Windows 8 isn't actually that bad. I never really use tiles myself, and you don't have to at all in order to use the PC.
The only time I ever used the start button on windows 7 was to get on my computer, or search for something - which I can do by creating a shortcut or something now, or still just use tiles and type and everything still comes up.
I just find it a faster version of windows 7 really. You get used to the change, and it really isn't that bad.
