PS4 has a massive lead over Xbox One

The 2 temp readings are for the main body of the console and the 2nd for the hot air that comes out the back.

I'm guessing he didn't show 2 different readings on screen for the XB1 as the temp was around the same for both readings, Only reason why he didn't show it I'm guessing.

He didn't take them apart to test the component temps though as that would truly be entering anorak territory ^_^

It's pretty worthless information then. I can see why for a handheld device like a phone or a laptop external surface temperature is important. However nobody sits around holding their console so how does knowing that help.

I guess knowing the core temperature would show which has the most thermal headroom and that would in some way prove which console was closest to its limits. If you want to make the statement that the PS4 runs hotter then they are the lengths you need to go. Measuring the power consumption would be the easiest way to establish which kicks out the most heat.

No it's not worthless information.

He measured temps during gaming loads and reported them.

This way you know which runs cooler and by all accounts the PS4 does run hotter than the XB1.

Now that I know the XB1 generally runs cooler I can have it in a more confined space compared to if I got a PS4, Ergo not worthless information.

How is the surface temperature of the casing valuable information. It gives no indication of the actual component temperature or the heat being produced. If one of them had a metal casing then it would be much hotter.

Put you PC inside a huge wooden box with ventilation holes. The surface temperature will be lower on the outside. But the temperature of each component will be exactly the same, the power consumption will be the same...

I agree in an application where you have direct contact with the exterior of the product that surface temperature is important, like the palm rest of a laptop, but here I don't see it.

Where he measured the temp from is part of the exhaust on the XB1, He measured in roughly the same place on top on both consoles in the APU area but he had to do it twice for the PS4 as it exhausts in a different area.

This is slowly venturing into anorak territory jr ^_^

Why should it not rapidly venture into Engineering territory. His methodology is questionable and as such his results don't really mean jack unless you want to know the exterior surface temperature of each console which really isn't helpful information.

Like I said power consumption is the best thing to measure. They are both very close to 0% efficient so you will get a heat output, far more useful than the temperature but whatever.

I guess in noob territory you have an accurate and commendable point but in anorak territory further research is required to validate said claims.

No it's not engineering territory, It's neckbeard anorak still a virgin at 20 territory :p

He measured the heat output on top of the XB1 as that's also where it exhausts it's hot air and also a general idea of case temps, He measured on top of the PS4 to get a case reading and on the rear to get an exhaust reading.

It was a basic temp test, I believe eurogamer did a more indepth test measuring watts used, Idle temps, Load temps, DB rating, Quite a lot more than Austin but around the same results.

He didn't measure heat output, end of discussion.

Not not end of discussion just because you say so lol :yelrotflmao:

XB1 is outputting 40'c, PS4 is outputting 59'c ergo XB1 runs cooler.

Now it's end of, Now stop debating and go and finish that sexy parvum build !!! ^_^

Having both, I can't really tell a big difference between the two when I put my hand behind the exhaust vents. To me they are pretty much equal but the PS4 is the louder one meaning it is trying harder to stay cooler. So based off that the PS4 will run hotter but the heat output is equal with the XB, just PS4's louder. The new PS4 that just released in Japan however is cooler/smaller/lighter and initial reviews see about a 30watt reduction in power consumption and it being much quieter.

That's pretty.....cool..... ^_^

Do you know if the revised PS4 will come to Europe any time soon ?

Also the PS4 uses a smaller cooling setup compared to the XB1 from the teardown pics I've seen hence it being louder, The fan has got to spin at mad speeds.

They should have put some stylized vents on the top near the cooling fan like this guy did, Apparently lowered temps and noise by quite a bit -

my current ps4 doesn't seem loud, its fairly quiet.

I read that there is a difference in having the ps4 vertical and horizontal in terms of fan noise when you play games
