PS3 5.1 sound from speakers?

Yup, it definitely looks like you'll need a decent decoder. Sorry, the ones I found on eBay was probably too basic and doesn't give too many options.

Actually the ones you found on ebay would do the trick nicely.

Oh I realised I had made it more complicated than it really was in my own head...haha. After I looked at the link to the speakers dipzy uses, it was then I found that you only needed the orange, green, and black connections from the back of the subwoofer to the decoder unit. The x3 RCA splitters are just there for speakers using RCA connections.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mines the same but I don't have the Switch Box. However if your speaker system cables are 3 x 3.5mm jacks they'll plug straight into the back of the decoder (3 connectors above the Power Adapter).

Although the Creative is discontinued there is an equivalent current product called the Teufel Decoder station.

Yup my speakers have the green, orange and black 3.5mm jacks

Thanks! Oh that's great to hear. Hoping this will work out for you. It's kind of troublesome when you have to add more to your setup. It would definitely be nice to see more speaker systems come with the SPDIF port as well.

I agree too, SPDIF should become a standard on audio systems just like a 3.5mm headphone jack is on a mp3 player especially in this day and age where surround sound is getting adopted by many people as its inexpensive to so nowadays with 5.1 speaker systems costing around &70

The only reason its an issue for me is that i like to use my tech to its full potential as much as i can. Having a 5.1 speaker system and a ps3 it makes sense to make use of that feature. Games would sound awesome to hear games such as uncharted and watch blu-rays. Having owned my ps3 and speakers for

2 1/2 years, i have yet to hear 5.1 surround from them. But yeah i hope it works out too and it will be worth it in the end.

Thanks again for the help

I found the following review on the creative decoder:

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2004/01/05/creative-decoder-ddts-100-review

I saw the following:

"The outputs are three 1.8-inch jacks that should look familiar to you PC users. (The rear center channel is router through the center/sub channel.) Before you PC gamers get your panties in knots, realize that the PC analog inputs are on the external switchbox, which you can see in the following picture. It works like this: Both the DDTS-100 and PC outputs go into the little box. A small switch controls which signal gets routed to the actual speakers."

Does that mean i'll need that switch box to my speakers on my pc and ps3?

I see that the main decoder unit have 3 optical connections, i order to get round, i could always connect the ps3 and pc to the decoder unit via optical cable as my sound card has that connection. Correct me if im wrong

I found a slightly clearer representation of the main decoder unit. I think, for the ease of use, if you were to only use it for DVD players and your PS3, the main unit will most likely be enough and the speakers will directly connect to the three speaker connections (green, black, and orange).

Then if you were to connect your PC as well, then I'd assume you'd need the smaller bridge unit that switches between the devices. I'm guessing you'll only need the bridge if you were using multichannel speakers and specific sound cards that don't have RCA connectors on them. Please correct me if I'm wrong or left anything out.

Wow this a good view of the rear of the unit

On the right hand side, above the power cable, are the green, orange and black speaker output connections. This where i assume my would connect my Gigaworks system as it says audio outputs above the connection.

And the rest of the connections are audio inputs including the 3 optical connections on the bottom left of the unit.

So that means i can connect my pc and ps3 to the optical connections and output 5.1 sound to my speakers.

If i can do this, then its perfect. Im a happy guy

When I had it as a workaround for my broken AV receiver, I had my BD player and Sky HD connected to the optical inputs. I then had the green output connected to my front speakers via stereo amp, black output connected to rear speakers via amp and orange connected to my sub and centre speaker. Worked fine with full 5.1. Switching between the 2 optical sources easily done with the Creative's remote.

Yup I'm thinking that looks like the optimal way to go. That way you wouldn't have to use the bridge unit with so many cables dangling everywhere.
