Project Silence

I posted a few pics in the Rigs section and was oped by Tom to come over here, so I have.

This is going to be a dual boot system running both Windows 7 and OSX. She'll be focusing mainly on silence so I'll be undervolting the CPU rather than overclocking it. I have done the overclock route in the past, hoewever that rig was rather loud.

Anyways, on with the build.

And now just the case

That's it for now

Obviously I can't commence further into the build, because I'm not a VIP and don't own a Sandy Processor. I'm also flying across the country for the break, so that makes it a lot harder to work on the case

. However, I'll complete this build with it's release. I'll also install a few updates of me stealing the DVD drive out of the other computer and such.

Specs:

Bought

5x 2TB WD Greens

Fractal Design Define R3 Silverarrow

Seasonic S12II 620W PSU

Going to Buy

Sandy Bridge i5 2500

Asus Mobo

8-16GB DDR3 Ram depending on pricing

A boot drive (either a WD black or an SSD)

Possible a Noctua cooler for the CPU depending on how loud the stock intel heat sinks are

Now there was a comment about the VAT and how I should buy my parts now. However, I'm Canadian so none of these taxes has an effect on me. Though I will say, Hello from Canada!

Well, some of you probably saw that I had to RMA my motherboard and CPU. I figure in the mean time I'll post some more pictures

CPU cooler, the fans pretty loud on this so I'll probably replace it with a noctua in the future.

loving the silence as this is what I aim for ill try get some pictures up of my build next week
smile.gif
you getting some internal hard drive enclosures? I use one for main drive and have 2 out of enclosures for windows back ups once a month(music/recordings etc.) Nearly went for that case myself but ended up getting a Lian li. I cant bring my self to buy anything else nowadays. That msi is ment to be a good cooler for silence ive read, and good bang for buck, nice purchase

Thanks for the positive remarks, I cannot wait to show the finished product when the last of the parts come back (from RMA)

Some more parts installed:

Another 80mm Front Fan to cool the 6 HDDs

The DVD Drive

depends on the rpm of the fans however? a fan controller like mine makes a difference.

Just make sure you have more air being taken out than being pushed in to the case

I have the White R3, for my home server. Great cases, and they already come with some sound proofing, so should help with the silence theme

What mobo/cpu you using dude?

He said and i quote,

"Going to Buy

Really nice rig you're building, won't those 80mm hdd fans make a racket though.

Thanks, the 80mm from fractal are actually pretty silent

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. That heatsink's nowhere near silent either. The Ram was too tall for the noctua, so I had to elect for this option.

Quite right, once I get the cash I'm going to buy a few Noctuas

I loved that build! It was because of that build that I went on to build this case. Thank you!

What mobo/cpu you using dude?

2500k/P9P67. I would like to thank you for the all videos you've posted. Without them this build have never happened. Keep up the fantastic work.

Replacement CPU and motherboard arrived (and they work this time!)

With the stock cooler I've only overclocked it to 4GHZ, I'll work on getting some voltages I like over the next few days. Overall the build changed greatly from when I first made first thread. I was going to buy a 2400 , but after the end of the year sales and Tom's review I opted for this mucher louder config. The total cost for the computer (not including the 5 2TBs and monitor I had beforehand) was $845 CDN before taxes. I think it's quite the stonker in terms of value for money.

Update: I've installed the aftermarket cpu cooler and got a 4.788 GHZ overclock

Here's the 3D mark score -

I finally got the overclock sorted out, sadly I was only able to get 4.81. But it's still not a bad result at 1.344 volts. Temps are great, with Intel Burn test averaging 58 Degrees C, jumping the 71 for about 4 seconds every 5 minutes.

Extremely clear pics man! I love what you're working with!

Thanks, those pics were taken with a Sony Alpha a200 with a 30mm macro lens

Now, it seems the motherboard is not working again. Here's a video of me troubleshooting the problems; the quality is not nearly as good as the pictures above.
