Im just getting into photo work and after having a look at the mess in the office that I have here. Decided that its finally time to have a nice fast photo rig

So far Ive got a choice of the following hardware

Motherboards

Foxconn P5GD1-VM

Asus P5wd2 Premium (rev 1.02)

Processors

Intel P4M 3.00ghz /1m /800 / 04A

Intel 805 5l8zh Malay 2.66ghz /2m /533 05b

Graphics cards

Asus Eax300se - x/TD/128mb/A

Asus EN6600 Silencer TD/128m/A

Asus EN6600TC256 TD/64M/A

PowerColor R92l-LC3 (answers on a postcard what the hell this one is)

Case

Cheiftec Big assed one that used to house a server

Memory

OCZ stuff thats been stood on a few times when I ummm.. Got hacked off with my machine that im using now crashing

Pump

Eheim 600 submerged

Cpu block

Nexus H2O-2000 - CPU Water Cooling Block Nexus H2O-2000

or

Alphacool NexXxos Xp light

Hdds are floating about.

Bearing in mind this is going to be a photo / test / mongrel build. What cpu would you guys recommend. Who knows I might even venture into the world of overclocking on this one as well.

I wanted to use the Nexus Block just for a change, but its massive and fouls on the side where the capacitors are

Anything that I dont use will be flogged off for the "Ive always wanted a mac but have no savings fund"

Just use all of that money and get a Mac Pro :)

Pentium D 805

E6600 Silencer

NexXxos block, it's gotten some pretty good reviews mefinks. I think a vew people here use it too.

What kind of budget are you on mate?

Budget is a grand total of ZERO, zilch, nada. Its going to be from the gubbins that i have here in the office laying about.

I do have a spare (that i just found

Powercolor x1600 XT card

Sapphire GTO2 x800 card (the one that can be clocked)

just doddling about.

As for the mac. About 200 notes saved so far.... looonnnggg way to go.

I dont want anything too high end, just somthing mid road is. I start back at college doing a photography and photoshop course and thats my justification for getting one.

Theres always normally a mid point between function and price but ideally im not looking to go about $1000 USD

I'd suggest a PowerBook G4 if it's going to be for photoshop work. The G4 uses Adobe's enhanced commands which makes it run super fast, faster than the new Intel Mac's (until the Universal binary version of PS is released at least). You should be able to find a used one for less than $1000.

Or you could definately look in to the Mac Mini's or MacBook's.

If you see anything over there thats half decent let me know. Id sort you out something for the hassle.

Meanwhile in project land i never really got my head around how much paste to put on things. How does this look?

From what I can tell it looks pretty good. I usually opt for the small bead in the middle technique but it's all personal preference, i really don't think it makes a difference.

lol theres one bit of kit ive got... that ive not listed that will make this VERY interesting :D

(edit) that I cant use to its full potential due to the tubing I have. Soooo off to the garden centre for me in a mo to get somethinga bit more flexi
