Project - Alternate (Custom PC Desk Build)

I'm in the same boat as Chrazey. I couldn't feel comfortable limited to the small leg space. It's completely phenominal work though. Personally I would have the shelves smaller underneath so I had space to spread my legs ;)

I can't wait to see how you start managing all the hardware to go inside.

Also have you tested the sound with the enclosures of the speaker? I tried to do something similar once, but I just couldn't get the right dimensions for clear sound without sacrificing low freq quality.

Just a thought here... won't the space for your legs be quite small?, or do you like having your kness togheter when you sit for longer periods of time?...
As the space on the photos does look quite limited.

As I've noticed that I need space for my legs when I buy a new desk, and not some tiny space for them, room is needed. But then again, we aren't all the same :)

Overall though... one of the best and coolest projects I've ever seen, really my kind of idea - although would never actually get it going, as I'm too lazy and wouldn't be doing it right. So kudos to you dude! ;)

Thanks Chrazey, yeah the space is ok for my skinny little legs.
I have a bit more space on this desk than i do on the older desk build,
Iv also made them cuts at an angle on the sides so i can twist on the chair without
banging my knees on the sides as i tend to do on my current desk lol

As I was building the desk I tested the height & seating placement to make sure i was happy, shaved 2"
of the height but everything else is comfortable.

Thanks Warchild,
I know what your both saying about the leg room, its important to me especially as iv had a broken leg for 3 years now :(
so dont want to be banging it too much lol
All feels good at the moment, but should i have problems later I can make some adjustments to the shelf's.

the sound is ok, no tweeter on yet & im not sure if I will add it or have 2 more speakers above the desk on the wall mounts,
sound was bad until I stuffed the inside with padding & added some sealer to the wood edges.

I need to test all this again when I have the PC running, most likely I will change some things.

A quick mid week update for you,
Started work on the center shelf holder that I plan to also run the water tubing though,

The shape might change slightly later in the build when i have the 2x RES in place.

Here it is in place, as you can see Iv also started to undercoat some parts, I started this now to see how well it would hold up & to help show imperfections.

You can see the parts I started to sand down, I have now given the desk 1 coat of MDF primer & 2 coats of white primer, sanding after every coat apart from the last one..
Whether I use a paint or go with wrap the surface will need to be sanded as good as possible. :(

Sanded down the speaker covers, not sure what colour Im going to use yet.

Decided to make the cones for the front of the desk from clay lol, yes clay... thought why not, I need the practice for a later
none PC related mission :)

Its air dry clay, so my cats looking after it for me as its out in the sun for the day :)

once it was hard enough I sanded them down to a better finish ready to prime & sand once more, I hate all the sanding :(

I also hollowed out the center to reduce the weight & cut some groves for the bracket.

Thats all for now, I will try have more updates for you at the weekend.. :)

here they are fitted, still just the undercoat until the build is complete

the gap wont be there when fastened down,

A plan from the start but not shown to everyone was some front lighting, I decided to keep it on the down-low encase I failed,
as Iv never done Plexiglas with LEDs..

Anyway, I think its looks good for now, should I change my mind later in the build when iv
painted or wrapped the desk I will cover them over :(

your thoughts on them would be appreciated, good or bad about anything on the build, constructive criticism can be a great help :)

don't want it to look too cheesy, but as there at my side I think they could act as nice room lighting :)

Started by cutting some plexi to the same angel as the front corners,

Sides move out the way so I can cut some groves for the plexi.

Did a bit more undercoating & the groves are now cut on both sides, top shelf still not completed as im awaiting the RES before
I make final cuts.

This is coming along nicely mate! Really liking it and especially the project, the idea behind it. Many kudos to you dude, as again... I couldn't have done it, even though this is my kind of idea :)

Just wondering... how much did this all end up at?, must be expensive I imagine, with all the pieces etc. I mean, it can't be cheap stuff this, as it must be strong enough to not fall apart... especially with expensive and delicate components inside.

Haha, I'm making this sound super expensive lol ^_^

Really nice on the LEDs though mate, really nice though and really liking the effect that it has. Not too much, nor too little. Just enough balance to give it that nice effect! :)

Awesome work mate, keep it up! :)

thanks mate, I will have a better idea on the cost when im done with the inside.

for just the desk bits, i.e wood, glass & fittings, I have spent about £150...
by the time im done i think it will have cost close to £250, £300
not counting any wrap or final paints i buy

Well mate, that isn't all that bad... considering what IKEA desks etc cost
Nice one and can't wait till the finished piece! :)

This looks amazing so far mate, the lighting you have done reminds me of the dead space games haha
