Professional 3D Work / I7 970 OC or 2600k OC?

Hi Guys!,

I´m building a PC for working on my master thesis and i have a hard time deciding which prozessor would be the best choise for my work!

I´ve read serveral reviews but most of them centering around gaming. Some of them have a cinebench test as well but not very detailed and not with overclocking single core and multi core.

I mostly work with 3ds max/zbrush/after effects and my main concern are fast render times and great viewport performence. So i need a CPU with a strong single and multi core! For the 2600k I would choose a 24/7 OC of 4,5 GHz and for the 970 4 GHz (?)

I can´t affort a dual CPU setup, but the i7 970 and the 2600k are both 100% in my budget, so the price is not a factor here

Pls help me make a choise and sry for my bad english!

970 without a doubt, having the boost of 6 core on the 970 compared with only 4 with the 2600k will greatly help your rendering times. Its true that the 2600k is ideally for gaming it does have Hyper threading but only 8 compared with the i7 970 having 12, the same as the i7 990x.

Could´t find a i7 970 for under €400, so i brought a 980x with an MSI Mainboard X58A-SD65 for €600

I looked up some reviews for the mainboard and i think its an "ok" one, or am i wrong?

also thanks for the links. Helped me quite a lot making my decition.

The guy who has build the renderfarm used a Corsair H50 Watercooling system. Would you recommend this over an aircooler for about €50? (I´m using the same case as he did) I´ve read that those all in one watercooling systems arn´t so good so i´m confused about that.

€70 would also be the max for cooling my cpu.

i use 3dsmax everyday

i have a 1055t hexacore @4.1GHz and it is ample

any i7 will be fine for animation - but you will need 8gb+ of 1600+ RAM

3D work means stressing your system for long periods of time so no I wouldn't reccomend any sealed watercooling unit like the H50/H70 etc.

I personally would reccomend the NH-D14, have one myself and although my CPU isn't the most difficult to keep cool I wouldn't trade it in for anything other than a full watercooling loop.

However there are other coolers like the Thermalright Silver Arrow which would do just as good a job. Depends mainly on what's available where you live.

Have both nh-d14 and wc-loop,on i7-970 .The wc-loop with a 360mm rad,is only 3-4c cooler than my nh-d14.Both rigs is folding at 100% cpu.

Those prefilled loops wont be efficiant enough for your needs. And strugling to keep temps low,the fans will run 100% and sounds like a propfan-jet taking off

Will recommend nh-d14 or the silver arrow

thanks for clearing that up guys!

I´ll go with the nh-d14 than. The CPU and mainboard arrived today and I´m wondering if i should stick to the MSI X58A-GD65 or sell it and buy a better board. Also i found a review where this MB was 7% slower than the top ones and i don´t know how this afflictes the Rendertimes.

I want to OC the 980x to 4,2 GHz for 24/7 (System will be rendering for 4 days straight) what would you do?

Also is there any beginner friendly guide to OC a 980x on the mainboard mentioned above? Its not the most popular board for the 980x as I couldn´t find anything on the interwebz :/
