Processor wierd stuff on top... Legit?

Ok many of you may know I have been having trouble with my PC build...

Today I ordered another GA-P35C-DS3R which should be coming tomorrow. Then I will take all the parts to the computer shop and get it put together.

Basically I put my PC together originally and couldnt get it to start up. I took it into the PC shop. The next day I got a phone call : 'The motherboard i broken' and 'iIt seems the heatsink wasnt on properly when you tried to power up you may have f**ked your processor'.

Later I recieved a call saying the processor was Ok: he tested it on another system.

So I went to collect my PC so I could package the mobo, and get it sent back... when I got it back the processor was in the mobo and it had some wierd stuff on the top (the heatsink didd too). I assume this is just what you get when you use the processor.

I was curious though as the processor was in the 'broken' mobo. Would you guys be suspicious if it were you that perhaps the compute bloke broke the mobo, based on the fact the processor was in there when it was returned, or do you think he most likely just put it back for safety?

(I am deciding if I should take it to the same place to get it built)

That stuff on the cpu and heatsink will be the thermal paste that is there to transfer the heat from the cpu to the heatsink.. Without it it would fry.

I'd say he probably put it there for safety.. Have you bought a new motherboard rather than just RMA it and get it replaced?

Thanks for the opinion. What I have done is returned the broken mobo, and ordered it again from the same place.

If I rmad it, Id have to wait for them to test it and send me a replacement. This way I get the mobo tomorrow before I go on holiday.
