problems folding with my gtx580

Hey, so recently my 580 has been doing something weird when i try to fold with it.

So what happens is that it starts out fine, but after maybe 5-15 % it slows down. What i mean is it still under full load (gpu tweak has it at 99-100%) but the temps drop from 61*C to about 38*C and then i also noticed the PPD drops from about 19,000 to 7,000

Now i don't know what is happening, but i fold a few WU with it since i got it and it was working fine till a few days ago when it started doing this. I tried to stop F@H and then open it again to see if it fixes the problem, and it does for 1 or 2 percent and then it goes back to acting funny.

Anyone have any ideas?

Try with "disable hiding clients" in configure

i did this and so far i'm 52% in a WU and no sign of dropping ppd, heat or anything so i'm assuming this fixed it

but i don't really understand why??

also the drivers have not been changed since i first installed the card, so i don't think it was that.

lastly i'm not sure how to check if the card is reverting into 2d mode....? can you tell me how to check, then if this happens again i can post a more detailed description of what is happening.

THANKS guys

ok so like 85% into the second WU it did the funny thing, i'll post what the log said under.

And yes i saw that the core clock went down from 910 to 405 and the memory clock went down from 4200 to 648...

it said there's some error but i don't get it.... and it just starts its self again just a lot slower......

and now it just finished that WU and moved on to the 3rd on of the day, but it it still using the lower clocks.... help plz

ok update, so i was messing about with gpu tweak and i saw that there is an option to disable 2d graphics settings, and i clicked that, and my screen went black for a sec and then came back to normal. then i notice that all the clocks went back to normal..... i'm now folding with that option to see if that fixed it, but i won't be sure until it does a few WU. but the werid thing is that when the clocks feel they didn't fall all the way down to the 2d clocks that were set (those were much lower) so i don't know wth was going on....

at least my 2500k @ 4.8GHz is not fussy and is just doing it's thing

Probably some sort of power saving feature of the GPU or something. OEOTS and I were alluding to the same thing - namely that the card may be scaling back in speed which is causing the drop. It seems like this was indeed the case.

hmm, interesting... wouldn't think it would do that if it was under that much load.

I say this because i tried to game with it (BF:BC2) for a few hours and it was reaching 69*C , (much higher then folding which caps at 59*C) and it never seemed to hold itself back then, maybe something to do with folding then... guess my 580 is lazy

anyways, so if that was the problem do you think that disabling the 2d will fix it permanently? so far it seems to still be working properly, but its only 35% in this WU

Yeah that should probably do it. I've heard of that happening before with folding and it's usually because the card reverts to 2d clocks.
