Power Phases between GD65 and P8z77 pro

So I was reading up on some specs between some of the Z77 motherboards, as I was looking at the power phases I noticed that the MSI has 12 power phases compared to the Asus that has 16. After some further reading it does not seem to matter much the MSI boards are receiving the some if not better ocs than the ASUS z77 pro and it is about 50 bucks cheaper.

To me it seems like the asus boards are way op and for the amount of power phases they have, you would think they would preform better. What are yalls thoughts?

After looking at all of this I am beginning to think about going with the MSI gd65 or gig ud5h rather than the asus z77 pro board.

power phases help but its not all bout that. Asus boards have more I beleive to assist with those going sub zero. But in theory more phases means more stable power but i think if ya have 12 that should be more than enough for the average bloke to oc with.

share some of your research bro I'm thinking getting a new board then rma my gig z68 ud4 and selling it.

Thanks Sin.

Well from what I have read the MSI board consumes the least amount of power than all same tier mobos from ASUS and Gigabyte. One thing I noticed is that the MSI does not have digital power but from what I can tell it does not make a difference. I have seen a 5.2 ghz oc with the 2600k on both the MSI and GIG board but not one for the ASUS pro or deluxe. I am sure they can do it just no one has yet.

As far as aesthetics go the MSI wins hands down imho. The dark blue and black just pop and the pcp seems a to be a lot cleaner looking than the competitors. One of the most important things I am looking for is decent on board sound and both the MSI and GIG come with the Realtek ALC898. I have a XFI extreme music but only the GIG comes with a legacy pci slot... But both of them come with a THX software overlay so it wont be as good but livable. The GIG has more usb 3.0 slots and a micro sata connection while the MSI does not. I am running SSD in raid 0 so this is negligible to me.

I prefer the MSI uefi bios over the GIG and ASUS seems a little easier to navigate around and looks sharp. MSI is coming out with a GD80 but the only couple of differences are 2 more power phases as well as the thunderbolt port. Other than that you will not be gaining anything else.

The 2 websites I got most of my info from is http://www.legitrevi...es/motherboard/ and http://nl.hardware.i...4-143490-148838 The last website has 20 Z77 mobo reviews and it lists all the differences you would want to know. You will have to translate tho it is in German I believe.

I think I will be going with the MSI and I will be ordering it tonight, BTW newegg has the GD65 on sale for 169.99 originally 189.99 but it is only for today.

Dangit your going to make me translate that... ugh lol haha

I am still unsure as to which one I want. I painted part of my Switch a metallic blue so the MSI would look awesome but you cant go wrong with the GIG boards either. The one thing that just does not work for me is that silver heat pip between the lower and upper heatsink on the GIG board.

Think you will be able to do rent and the mobo?

lol the german part is what i said above it lol I doubt it bro lol my child support kills my paycheck now thats its being taken out by state. where before I paid it directly to her but fell behind whiel she was in hospital cause i had to take time off from work (no pay) to take care of my kids (3 and 5 then) while she recovered from her current but future ex beating her. But the state dont take that into consideration they just say hey your behind now ya have to pay more. And now she's is moving them to El Paso cause shes afraid to stay here cause he's out of jail. But anyways lol

oh and a lil secrect I dont speak german let alone write it hahahaha i used a online translater

Like most I know a lil german as well as spanish but just enough to get me in trouble.

lol dang man. Well stinks that it works out that way but there are priorities and they always must come first...

Im going to grab the MSI it just looks so bad ass. Heck if you grab the gigabyte maybe we will switch sometime or compare clocks and what not.

Same here but I still learn more each day haha =)

sounds like a plan I'm still waiting to see what my checks like so I can make a decission. With luck I'll get my performance bonus this check and make it all work otherwise it'll have to wait lol

lol well at least you are not missing out on the instant rebate. I got free 2day shipping from new so it should be here wednesday maybe tuesday. Lets go IB =)

Also I like I would go with the ASUS board just in case. VRMs also help with keeping a nice 24/7 clock stable and can extend the life of CPU over that period as well. For VRMs as said can provide a better OC but can also provide higher 24/7 clocks with less sacrifice from the chip.

Just my 2 cents.

I've been thinking about this too, my last board was the Asus formula IV and it was great but I tend to feel you pay for a lot of gimmicks on many of their higher end boards.

I was looking around for info on the Maximus V Formula and as an example, I know VRM cooling is important to a certain extent, ROG have gone as far as to plum a watercooling tube into the VRM heatsinks - come on, that's just over the top.

Having said that when they were forced to make decisions on what to put on the V gene I think the size of the mobo has really helped them make decisions. Just the good stuff is on there and it makes for a really impressive little board that fights toe to toe with the big boys.

Having said that, all the ATX boards, from what I've seen performance wise, are near as damnit as good as each other. The UD5H seems to top a lot of charts I've seen for what it's worth given how close all the boards seem to be; the GD65 performs almost identically yet has a massive energy efficiency margin.

Ya I agree with everything said. I did go with the MSI due to the aesthetics and its power saving capabilities.

Should be here tuesday =). I will be very interested in seeing what the end users get between these 2 boards.
