POV GTX 480

Morning All,

I just sold my HD6950 2gb and bought a GTX 480 from Point Of View. The 480 can easily be overclocked to stock 580 speeds and im really happy with performance.

Just one niggly problem I have though is the temps that are idling at 72c and stock voltage is

1113mv

I can easily undervolt the card to 1000mv whilst running at stock 480 speeds though but this does not seem to bring down the temps.

I have also removed the IHS and removed the stock Tim replacing it with some Gelid Extreme bt this has changed nothing...

Some input would be well appreciated from you guys as I could still RMA this card as it is a brand new card..

Temps under load are upper 90's using stock fan profile, I can keep them at low 80's with fan on full...

Just ran a bench with 850core and 2000 memory and temps are the same as stock with fans on full

I just built a PC for my brother with a GTX 480 and his idles at 45 Celsius, max temps 75-80 under stress test max load.

What is going on with yours? Do you have enough airflow?

Well, 480s are infamous for just how hot they get. If you can adjust your fan profiles so your card is, perhaps, high 80s/low 90s during gaming (assuming that you game...) it should be fine.

i know a guy with sli 480s and his are around the same temps but 1 should be a little cooler.

does the temps drop if you open the side of your case?

why didnt you jsut flash to 6970 for free?
My twin frozr III 6950 wouldnt unlock... And even my sapphire 6950 which does unlock is slower when overclocked than a overclocked 480 due to voltage limitation on the harddware...

Its on a bench table for the moment, should be getting my r3 delivered today though

What worrying me is the idle temps and volts.....

Latest Afterburner and Latest GPU-Z both giving 75c in idle and gpu is correctly downlclocking to 450mhz, I have noticed my vddc doesnt downclock like the core though....

Disconnected 2nd screen and it does downlclocks even further - Significant temp drop also - I am now idling @ 58c... YEYYYYYYY

So all that extra power / heat caused just for having a second screen !!!!!!

Is there anyway I can mod this drivers/bios so I can downclock all the way to 50mhz whilst using a second screen ?

Yeah, bandwagon infamous.

I like the guy posting above you, have a 480 rig in the house, idling at 45 and pushing 80 on full load. Nicely overclocked ofcourse

If you really want to push the boat out, you can get a 3rd party cooler for £30 or so. The one that Zotac used is one of the best, takes up alot of space tho. But there are others.

I do think there was a bios or driver issue for 2 screen use, harping way back to the 2d/3d issues with the likes of the 285. There were bios updates early on, but I don't think they touch on this ? Could be wrong.

I know this is extremely improbable but once my friends monitor had some strange issue and was transmitting electricity by the dvi cable, and giving shocks, I don't know how the pc survived, but have you tried with other 2nd monitor?

Mounted all the gear in the Define R3 this morning, will stick to using single monitor until I find a solution.....

Oh and got the thermalright 480 vrm heatsink this morning, just waiting for the shaman, should be here very soon....

I know this sounds like a pain in the ass but could you stick another monitor into it and tell me how your idle temps with both screens switched on......

Sure I'll give it a shot, prob have to get back to you... sunday on it cos someone else using it right now.

It has 2x DVI and hdmi, which you using so I can do same ?
