Photo Recovery Software Required. Urgent.

Long story short:

Cousin's laptop. Has over 1 thousand viruses. All his pics on a seperate partition (E: drive). Needed to re-install windows to save PC. All pics gone on partition drive.

Need them by tonight or else he loses his job (ouch!).

Oh and please don't start making comments about how he should have back-ups and such.

Try to keep it simples please lol.

TESTDISK is a DOS-based FREE utility that you can use to recover deleted/damaged files/partitions but it can be difficult if you don't have any idea about what you are doing.

When you're recovering lost files/partitions, it is not as simple as it sounds, you get a lot of "ghost" files/partitions, that were on the drive before. The idea is to not use destructive recovery methods right away (writing on the disk that you want to recover data from), use the "preview" mode and recover data by copying file by file to another HDD before attempting to do any actual partition recovering.

The only commercial utility that I used successfully is GetDataBack and I used quite a few when my Samsung drives decided to "drop" some partitions out of the blue. They were F1's and T166S's. Coincidence? Maybe. But I decided to stay away from Samsung drives and ATI's SB600-7x0 that week. Unfortunately it is a commercial software.

I just found out about this software: PC Inspector File Recovery 4 that some sites out there report good things about. Check it out, it is free apparently.

@ctive partition recovery software for me behaved strangely. It seemed to work, and it did with smaller files (<1GB) but with large files (>1GB) it only recovered the first 1GB of information, even if the file seemed to be OK. I had a few HD rips that were big files, and the movies were incomplete at playback. Just a warning. Maybe it will work for you, test it first.

Active Undelete is my favorite, but it's not free iirc and I think the trial is set to a max filesize.

Just found out that there are 360 directories, 11040 files. 58.2GB

GetDataBack is the only one so far that has shown me all the files.

Anything else so far shows me only 5 files and those are files from the reinstallation.

Wooh!

Time to try Restorer 2000.

Edit: Restorer fails.

Just found a special option for a deep search within Active@ Undelete.

I didn't format.

The Windows recovery disc did. Was hoping that E: drive would stay safe

Recuva was the first thing I tried but it said 4 hours remaining for scanning so I gave up on that.

Ok so I found a decent one after trying quite a few after accidentally deleting someone's profile on a work PC when I thought they had left only to find out they were on maternity leave .

Anyway I can't remember it's name as I have it at work but it was something very similar to this:

This app and this man saved my whole backup drive: about 40GB of music and 100GB Movies.

When someone says 'available in all the usual places' normally means get a torrent.!

They have the registry hacks in there, but check first.

I left an external HDD plugged up and it formatted it for me a while ago, how unhelpful.

I just used freeware prog, googled, and got most stuff back.

I have never had Windows format another partition during install before though.
