perplexed about my SSD

Hi Guys, Wondering if someone can shed some light. I have a Z68X-UD3R-B3 motherboard and up until the other day I had my G.skill 64gb SSD plugged into my 6gb/sec connector on the M/B. this drive was one of the first gen SSD and is running at Sata 3 Gb/sec. The other day i purchased an OCZ 60GB Sata 6 Gb/sec drive and am using it as my boot drive(plugged into the 6gb/sec also). Now the problem. I am running crystaldiskmark and get a better score off my old g.skill. Running 5 iterations of 50MB my scores are:

OCZ 60gb - 191.0 and 61.12

G.Skill 64gb - 215.4 and 108.2

can somebody tell me if there is a tweak or something I am missing.

try running 100mb and 1000mb and see what is shows also more specific intel on odel of ssd's would be of help

Ok, Ive not got an SSD yet myself however, judging by those numbers, it's looks like your 64gb G.Skill is performing as it should but something is rather wrong with the OCZ. Maybe you should RMA? I mean, these SSDs don't have any additional configuration do they? Possibly a firmware update might help if it's a known bug?

Sorry I cannot assist, hopefully S_I_N will have some more ideas.

did you install using achi??? have you checked for firmware updates?? have you checked ur mobo manu website for know compatibility issues with that ssd??? have you checked the ssd's manu website for compatibility issue with that mobo???

Hey S_I_N, I installed in IDE mode and I know I can make the necessary changes in windows 7 registry and then change it in bios but I read that the performance gains were negligible and I don't intend on using hot swap. Gigabyte website doesn't suggest a compatibility issue and nor does the OCZ site.

I guess I'll keep looking aroung at forums etc coz its a bit weird.

which ocz ssd drive is it? you can download the ocz toolbox for your drive this enables you to update firmware it also has a secueity tab for reseting back to factory settings you must do update firmware and factory reset in ahci mode i reset my vertex 2e and windows experience score jumped from7.1 to 7.8 i'll run crystaldisk mark to see what scores its giving me. i'll post back later

heres some scores of my ocz vertex2E 3gb/s connection btw i know windows index score is poo it just shows that the factory reset in ocz toolbox actually does reset it back to factoy settings giving you the preformance back

well my understanding is trim works better with achi enabled during the install as well as key settings are preset for ya during install as well. might just need to enable it and tweak it out

I thought IDE mode was considered to cap the maximim through-put on the connected device? Not really an issue for conventional HDDs (though I did get a slight boost on one of my faster 1.5tb drives switching to ACHI) but on an SDD it has the potential to strangle it I'd imagine. Note: my own experiement (i.e. initially setting it up wrong) was on one of my older P45 chipset boards.

Hey guys really appreciate the tips and tricks. Hey Tallun I'm not getting as high as those results so I might download the toolbox and see if there is something I can do. My firmware revision is 2.11 which I am pretty sure is the latest. I ended up re-installing Windows 7 64bit as the patch seemed to stuff things up changing to AHCI from IDE. My scores in WEI went up dramatically (see below) but I am only getting a 213.4 and 105.1 for 100mb (Seq) in crystaldiskmark 3.0.1 x64.

My WEI scores are:

Processor - 7.6

Memory - 7.9

Graphics - 7.9

Gaming Graphics 7.9

Primary HDD 7.8

Now just to improve those diskmark scores.

are you sure ur on the sata 6Gb ports?? on my UD4 I have 4 2 controlled by the Z68 chipset with 4 sata 3GB and 2 sta 6GB ran off the marvell chip

According to the manual(just double checked) they are the 6gb/sec controllers and the other 6gb/sec ones are the grey sata ports. There are 4 'black' sata ports and they are sata 3gb/sec ports.

Could I be using an incorrect sata cable?

that question is open to debate. They shoiuld be backwards compatable but does this mean they are forward compatable????? thats where the debate comes in. But if ur using the cables that came with the mobo they should be 6's but it never hurts to try others as well. I went out an bought m own sata 6GB cables that are black and rounded I like the look of them lol.

i dont think they are, my rampage 3 extreme come with normal 3gb/s cables(red) and two 6gb/s cables (black with white ends)
