Permission to let off some steam about off-the-shelf 'gaming' computers

probably better than any person irl. people don't behave like what they really are irl, the need to fit in is too overwhelming.

i dont care if people dont like me i dont force my self to fit in... its why i like these forums most of us are very like minded :)

they don't mention it, but he must be. nobody is that socially awkward, no matter how "unaverage" you are.

Sheldon is obviously not a realistic character, but he's just that: a character. The show would be a total flop it it portrayed a 100% accurate image of the average geeks because then it would be just like the life of a geek, i.e. boring and hard for normal people to understand. They have to dumb it down to make it successful.

At least they're not as bad as the people who write kid's TV. There's always the "nerd" character but they rarely bother to do enough research to even make it realistic. I'vce lost count of the number of times I've heard "Pass me the DX4000 cable for the monitor sync codes" or "If I route the data packets through the proxy and bounce it into space 7 million times I should be able to track his IP and hack his ethernet".

The world needs more Dexters. Let's face it, the kind of geeks who sit in cellars and play board games are pretty useless compared to the geeks who tinker in their sheds and end up inventing cool stuff.

this.
and that is why i don't like it. i don't like dumbed down things, i don't like "normal people", i don't like what is considered to be a geek by most people, i don't like tbbt.

Have you ever seen The IT Crowd? It's still dumbed down for TV but to a lesser degree than TBBT. Plus, most of the technical references are relatively accurate.

most refs on TBBT have a leader in the field advising them and all the boards in their rooms are real equations

I do admire this about it, they clearly go to a lot of effort to keep the geeks happy. What has been pointed out to me is that Sheldon's logic is not always... well, logical. That's just being pedantic though really and if they changed it then they would basically be left with no story lines as most of them are based around Sheldon being Sheldon.

write the equations on your head and dance, if you want real science go for the sixtysymbols channel or numberphile or a similiar youtube channel.
what is science worth if it's dumbed down for the average person.
i wonder if television can get any worse, good that i don't even own a TV anymore.

everyone has their opinons :) i personally think science should be available to all and everyone should get a basic understanding :) but thats just me :D

the basic understanding is thought in elementary school. it's not like those people speak in jargon, i don't have a degree in particle physics, still i understand what they say. science should be open for everyone who cares.

Everybody's got to start somewhere. If the average person gets bombarded will enough science they'll soon turn into an above-average person.

Admittedly TBBT is probably not the place to kick start your scientific education but it's not meant to be educational anyway. It's a form of entertainment and, for those who watch it, an effective one. 99% of the audience won't care about the equations and the 1% who do probably have more important things to worry about.

awesome might come to you if i get stuck doing thermofluids if you dont mind :)
and thats true, but its not taught in an interesting way
